Why the choice of the first instrument is critical<\/h2>\n<p>Let's face it: the wrong choice is the #1 cause of telescopes that end up gathering dust in an attic or classified ad. An instrument that's too complex, too heavy or optically mediocre turns a budding passion into frustration.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, a \u00abgood\u00bb telescope is a window onto the infinite, allowing :<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>To get the immediate \u00abWhaou\u00bb:<\/strong> See Saturn's rings or lunar craters in sharp focus from the very first outings.<\/li>\n<li><strong>To understand celestial mechanics:<\/strong> Learn to navigate among the stars naturally.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stay motivated:<\/strong> Even when it's -5\u00b0C outside.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 id=\"quoi-observer\">2. What do you really want to observe?<\/h2>\n<p>That's the question I always ask first. In Switzerland, we're lucky enough to have quick access to the mountains, but many of us live on the Plateau, where light pollution is rife.<\/p>\n<h3>Solar System\u00ab option (Moon and Planets)<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/starwalk.space\/gallery\/images\/moon-phases-1\/fr\/1920x1080.jpg\" alt=\"Phase de la lune | Position de la lune aujourd'hui | Lune ce soir | Star  Walk\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If your dream is to detail Jupiter's cloud bands, Cassini's division of Saturn's rings or the Moon's relief, city light pollution won't bother you. See the Orion Nebula or the Andromeda Galaxy? There's only one rule here: <strong>diameter is king<\/strong>. The wider your mirror, the more photons (light) it collects. A telescope is first and foremost a light funnel.<\/p>\n<p>\ud83d\udc49 <strong>My pro tip:<\/strong> Visit <strong>Dobson<\/strong> is the ultimate deep-sky weapon. To start really \u00abseeing\u00bb and not just \u00abguessing\u00bb, I recommend a diameter of 200mm (8 inches). It's the standard that never disappoints.<\/p>\n<h3>Family observation (with children)<\/h3>\n<p>With children, patience is limited. It has to work, right away. The priority is sturdiness and simplicity.<\/p>\n<p>\ud83d\udc49 The <strong>Table dobs<\/strong> are brilliant. What's more, new technologies like the <em>StarSense Explorer<\/em> (which uses your smartphone to guide the telescope) have revolutionized initiation: the child sees on the screen where to push the telescope to find the object. It's fun and educational.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 id=\"quel-type\">3. What type of telescope should I choose?<\/h2>\n<h3>The Dobson: The best Diameter\/Price ratio<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/deep-space-astronomy.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/e99bb920fa2a6fcc0eacd6af2267c17a__m_1_v0518_1390x1390-Photoroom.png\" alt=\"Dobson 500 mm (20&quot;) f\/3.6 Ultra Light GEN 2 - Deep space astronomy\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It's often the No. 1 choice of enthusiasts, and not by chance. A Dobson is a large tube on a wooden base (the \u00abrocker\u00bb).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Advantages :<\/strong> You pay for the lens, not the frame. It's intuitive (up-down, left-right).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Disadvantage :<\/strong> It's manual (except for more expensive motorized models) and sometimes cumbersome.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>In Switzerland, where you sometimes have to drive a few kilometers to escape the fog, make sure the tube fits into your car!<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>The Astronomical Telescope (Refractor): Zero maintenance<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/deep-space-astronomy.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/22460_StarSense_Explorer_DX_102_01-avec-arriere-plan-supprime-768x768.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is the slim tube with a lens in front. Ideal for those afraid of making adjustments (collimation).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Advantages :<\/strong> Very sharp image, ready for immediate use, no need to adjust mirrors.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Disadvantage :<\/strong> At the same price, the diameter is much smaller than that of a mirror telescope. If you only want to observe, stick to an azimuth or Dobson mount.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 id=\"budget\">4. What is a realistic budget (price in CHF)?<\/h2>\n<p>Astronomy is an investment. Here's what you can expect within your budget on the current Swiss market:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Less than CHF 200 :<\/strong> Beware of the minefield. There are some decent little instruments for children, but also a lot of \u00abtoys\u00bb.<\/li>\n<li><strong>CHF 200 to 450 :<\/strong> The serious gateway. You get access to 130mm or 150mm Dobsons, or beautiful introductory glasses. Enough to keep you busy for years.<\/li>\n<li><strong>CHF 450 to 800 :<\/strong> The comfort zone. This is the price of a 200mm Dobson (250mm second-hand) or a good Maksutov on a stable mount. This is durable equipment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"background-color: #ffebee; border: 1px solid #c62828; padding: 15px; margin: 20px 0;\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0; color: #c62828;\"><strong>\u26a0\ufe0f The \u00ab600x magnification\u00bb scam\u00bb<\/strong><br \/>\nAbsolutely avoid any telescope sold with \u00ab500x or 600x magnification\u00bb written in large letters on the box. It's physically impossible to get a clear image at this level with a small instrument.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 id=\"selection\">5. My selection: The best models by use<\/h2>\n<p>Rather than long technical speeches, here are the models I recommend with my eyes closed.
