It has been available in our store since the very beginning and has been a staple for generations of amateur astronomers, including ourselves. My first telescope was a Sky-Watcher Skyliner 254 mm Dobsonian: I still have it, I love it, and even today it offers one of the best aperture-to-price ratios on the market. Here is the story of a brand that has made astronomy accessible to everyone.

All the info at a glance

Founded in 1999 by Synta Technology Corporation (Taiwan)

Founder: David Shen, former optical polisher

Manufacturer: Suzhou Synta Optical Technology (Suzhou, China)

Headquarters: Richmond, British Columbia, Canada

2000: The First Dobsons

2001: The First Maksutov-Cassegrain Telescopes

2002: First German EQ6 equatorial mount

2004: First ED-APO refractors

2005: Synta acquires Celestron

2008: FlexTube Dobson (folding tubes, patent pending)

2008: Partnership with Schott AG (German optical glass manufacturer)

2024: Wave frames with harmonic drive

2026: HAC125DX Minigraph (Honders f/2 astrograph), Esprit EDX, ORBIS

Range: 60 mm to 508 mm opening

The No. 1 brand among enthusiasts worldwide

David Shen: From the Polisher to the Optical Empire

Sky-Watcher Skyliner 250P Classic, the 254-mm Dobsonian telescope that sparked our passion. Credit: Sky-Watcher.

It all began in Taiwan in the 1980s. David Shen—whose real name is Dazhong Shen—worked as a lens-polishing technician at a research institute. He polished lenses by hand, day after day, and learned optics through hands-on experience. «In the past, telescopes were accessible only to a select few. But I hoped to help more people see farther,» he explains.

In the early 1990s, Shen founded the Synta factory to manufacture optical components. In 1992, production moved to Suzhou, China, to a new, large-scale manufacturing facility. The first 114-mm Newtonian telescopes were produced there and distributed under the Celestron and Tasco brands—brands that were unaware at the time that they would soon be working for the same man.

In 1999, Shen made a radical decision: to launch his own brand. Synta created «Sky-Watcher,» headquartered in Richmond, Canada. The goal was simple: to manufacture high-quality telescopes at affordable prices. The aperture-to-price ratio became Sky-Watcher’s hallmark.

2000–2004: The Founding Years

Sky-Watcher Skyliner 200P FlexTube SynScan, the Dobsonian telescope with a collapsible tube. Credit: Sky-Watcher.

The year 2000 marked the launch of the first Sky-Watcher Dobson telescopes. The Dobson, named after John Dobson, a monk and amateur astronomer, is the ideal design for making astronomy accessible to everyone: a simple wooden mount, a large mirror, and an affordable price. Sky-Watcher has made it its flagship product.

In 2001, the first Maksutov-Cassegrain telescopes were added to the lineup. In 2002, the arrival of digital SLR cameras sparked a craze for astrophotography. Sky-Watcher launched the EQ6, its first German equatorial mount capable of supporting a heavy optical tube for long-exposure imaging. The EQ6 became legendary: thousands of astrophotographers around the world adopted it.

In 2004, Sky-Watcher made the leap into high-end optics with its first ED-APO refractors. Until then, apochromatic telescopes made with ED glass had been the exclusive domain of Japanese and German brands at unaffordable prices. Sky-Watcher made them affordable.

2005: A stroke of genius—Synta acquires Celestron

In 2005, the amateur astronomy industry was shaken up: Synta, Sky-Watcher’s parent company, acquired Celestron, the legendary American brand founded by Tom Johnson in 1960. Celestron was in financial trouble, and Synta, which was already manufacturing some of its products, bought it out.

This marks a strategic turning point. Synta now owns two complementary brands: Celestron for the U.S. market and the high-end segment, and Sky-Watcher for Europe, Asia, and the aperture-to-price ratio. Both brands share the same manufacturing facility in Suzhou but maintain their own design offices and distinct product lines.

2008: FlexTube, the patent that revolutionized Dobson telescopes

In 2008, Sky-Watcher filed a patent that revolutionized the Dobsonian telescope: the FlexTube. This three-section collapsible tube allows a 300-mm Dobsonian to be stored in a space half the size. You unfold the tube, observe, fold it back up, and store it. The giant Dobsonian telescope can now be transported in a sedan.

That same year, Sky-Watcher entered into a partnership with Schott AG, the German manufacturer of high-quality optical glass. The mirrors in the large Dobson telescopes and the ED lenses now feature Schott glass, a mark of quality recognized throughout the global optical industry.

The Esprit EDX Line: Taking on the High-End Market

Over the years, Sky-Watcher has moved upmarket. The Esprit EDX series—Super APO triplet telescopes featuring Ohara FPL-53 glass—represents the culmination of this effort. Available in sizes ranging from 70 mm to 150 mm, the Esprit EDX rivals high-end brands—which cost two to three times as much—in optical quality. The MHTC surface coatings achieve 99.5% light transmission per air-to-glass interface.

The Esprit EDX series is now available in our store: from the 60EDX to the 150EDX, with optional field correctors and reducers for full-frame astrophotography.

2024–2026: Harmonic Drive Wave, HAC125DX, and ORBIS

Sky-Watcher never stops. In 2024, the brand is launching the Wave 100i and 150i mounts, its first harmonic drive mounts. The Wave 100i supports 10 kg without a counterweight, while the 150i supports 15 kg. Both models feature equatorial and alt-azimuth modes, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and integrated cable management in the mount head. Sky-Watcher is entering the market for high-load-capacity mounts without counterweights, a market previously dominated by ZWO.

In 2026, the HAC125DX Minigraph will be released: a Honders catadioptric astrograph with an f/2 aperture, 125 mm diameter, 250 mm focal length, and weighing 3.8 kg. It is the fastest and most compact astrograph in the lineup. Astronomy Magazine included it in its 2026 Star Products selection. And the ORBIS 60EDX ushers in a new generation of compact APO refractors.

Why We've Always Loved Sky-Watcher

My first telescope was a Sky-Watcher Skyliner 254 mm Dobsonian. 254 mm aperture, 1,200 mm focal length, f/4.7. I still have it. I love it. It’s the telescope I used to discover Saturn’s rings, Jupiter’s bands, the Orion Nebula, and the globular clusters M13 and M3. A 254 mm parabolic mirror, 94 % reflections, a Dobsonian mount of discouraging simplicity. No GoTo, no Wi-Fi, no autoguiding: you point the tube by hand, you search, you find. And when you find it, the deep sky reveals itself in all its depth.

That’s Sky-Watcher: the brand that makes astronomy accessible without compromising on aperture. The 254 mm Dobson—the same design that has made astronomy accessible to everyone since 2000. The brand that takes you every step of the way: from your first naked-eye observation through a Dobson to deep-sky astrophotography with an Esprit 150EDX mounted on a Wave 150i. One brand, from beginner to expert.

Why shop at Deep Space Astronomy?

We're not just a retailer.
