Based on the Sony IMX585 4K CMOS sensor, it combines excellent sensitivity, high resolution, and low noise. Its particularly attractive price point makes it an affordable yet high-performance solution for both beginners and those looking to advance in Deep-Sky Astrophotography.

High-resolution Sony IMX585 4K sensor

At the heart of the ASI585MC Pro is a Sony CMOS sensor in the 1/1.2 inch, with pixels as small as 2.9 μm. This design provides a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels, for a total of 8.29 megapixels. This high resolution allows for the capture of a great deal of detail and is particularly well-suited for imaging galaxies, nebulae, star clusters, and other deep-sky objects.

The technology STARVIS 2 further enhances the sensor's performance. Thanks to its back-illuminated structure, the Sony IMX585 offers excellent light sensitivity and effectively captures faint signals from celestial objects. As a result, the camera maintains a very high level of detail, even when photographing dim targets.

A high frame rate of 47 frames per second

The ASI585MC Pro isn't limited to deep-sky astrophotography. In high-speed mode, it can reach up to 47 frames per second at full resolution. This high frame rate is particularly useful for capturing images of the Sun, the Moon, and the planets, where taking a large number of images allows you to select the best ones and minimize the impact of atmospheric turbulence.

This versatility makes the ASI585MC Pro a true versatile astronomical camera, capable of switching from long-exposure imaging of deep-sky objects to the rapid image acquisition required for planetary astrophotography.

A full-well capacity of 40 ke-

The sensor's back-illuminated structure also improves its ability to accumulate electrons. Despite its small pixels of 2.9 μm, the ASI585MC Pro achieves a full-well capacity of 40 ke-, which is nearly three times that of the previous-generation IMX485 sensor.

A high full-well capacity allows the sensor to collect more light before reaching saturation. This helps preserve detail in bright areas, limit overexposure, and achieve a best signal-to-noise ratio, especially when the image contains both very bright regions and particularly dim areas at the same time.

Zero Amp Glow Technology

One of the major advantages of the ASI585MC Pro is its built-in technology Zero Amp Glow. Unlike some CMOS cameras, the sensor does not exhibit the characteristic glow that can appear in dark areas during long exposures.

This function is implemented directly in the hardware level and therefore requires no specific software control. It produces exceptionally clean dark frames and makes it easier to process astrophotographs, regardless of the exposure time or gain level used.

Two-stage TEC cooling

For long exposures, the ASI585MC Pro features a two-stage TEC cooling system. This allows the temperature of the CMOS sensor to be lowered by more than 35 °C above room temperature. By lowering the sensor temperature, the system limits the current of darkness and thermal noise, which results in cleaner images during long exposures.

A Delta T value of 35 °C was measured at an ambient temperature of 30 °C. Actual performance may vary depending on operating conditions and ambient temperature.

Low read noise and wide dynamic range

The ASI585MC Pro also includes a HCG (High Conversion Gain) mode which effectively reduces read noise as gain increases, while maintaining a wide dynamic range. When the gain reaches 252, HCG mode is activated automatically.

At this level, the dynamic range remains close to 11 bits, while the operating noise can drop to as low as 0.7 e-. This combination is particularly useful for bringing out fine details in deep-sky objects while maintaining good control over the bright areas.

Features

ASI585MC Pro

Sensor

Sony IMX585 CMOS

Format

1/1.2″

Resolution

3840 x 2160 – 8.29 MP

Pixel size

2.9 μm

Technology

STARVIS 2

Maximum speed

47 frames per second at full resolution

Full-Well

40 ke-

Amp Glow

Zero Amp Glow

Cooling

Two-stage TEC

Delta T

Over 35 °C

HCG mode

Automatic activation at gain level 252

Playback noise

Up to 0.7 e-

Thanks to its Sony IMX585 4K sensor, its TEC cooling system, its technology Zero Amp Glow, its quiet operation, and its speed of up to 47 frames per second, the ZWO ASI585MC Pro is a particularly comprehensive solution for astrophotography.
