Its 1-inch sensor and 4.5 µm pixels meet the solar imaging requirements specified by the manufacturer. It combines fast frame rates with regulated cooling to accommodate a variety of shooting conditions using the same camera body.

The analog-to-digital converter is natively 12-bit. At a resolution of 1600 × 1100 pixels, ToupTek reports a frame rate of up to 133.1 frames per second in 8-bit mode and approximately 66.5 frames per second in 12-bit mode for this version. These figures apply specifically to this resolution and should not be interpreted as guaranteed frame rates for all capture settings.

The global shutter and the sensor’s sensitivity are highlighted for solar imaging. The manufacturer specifically describes its use with solar spectrographs, solar telescopes, and compatible Hα equipment. The camera is a recording device: it does not replace the instrument’s solar protection and filtering system. A complete and appropriate solar observation setup remains essential before any use for solar observations.

The two-stage TEC cooling system uses PID control, with a specified stability of ±0.1 °C. ToupTek reports a temperature drop of up to 35 °C below ambient during short exposures, and 45 °C for long exposures of at least 5 seconds. A controllable fan helps dissipate heat. This performance depends on operating conditions and does not represent an absolute temperature imposed on the sensor.

A heating element built into the sensor chamber offers four software-configurable settings to minimize condensation. The camera also features a 512 MB DDR3 buffer and a USB 3.0 interface that is backward compatible with USB 2.0. The buffer helps manage the image stream between the camera and the computer during high-speed acquisitions.

The HCG and LCG gain modes allow you to adjust the sensor’s operation to suit the session’s objectives. Control is supported by ToupSky as well as the ASCOM, INDI, and DirectShow environments, provided the appropriate drivers are installed. The manufacturer recommends a stable 12 V / 3 A DC power supply and advises against using power supplies with uncertain specifications or unstable output.

Technical specifications

Sensor

Sony IMX428 Color

Format

1 inch

Pixels

4.5 µm

Shutter

Global

Native ADC

12 bits

Tampon

512 MB DDR3

Frame rate at 1600 × 1100 in 8-bit

133.1 frames per second

Camera Power Supply

12 V DC / 3 A

The ToupTek ATR428C is a color astronomical camera equipped with a Sony IMX428 global shutter sensor.
