The IR version adds infrared remote control capability to the V4-EC series. It allows you to operate the panel in the field without a USB connection when ASCOM control is not in use, using a 12 V power supply.

Choose the Right Diameter

The manufacturer recommends choosing a light diameter that is equal to or greater than the outer diameter of the fog shield. Therefore, measure the outside of the fog shield—not just the instrument’s optical aperture—before selecting your panel. Diameters of 80, 100, 150, 190, 225, and 240 mm are listed here. The 125 mm IR model already has its own separate product page on Deep Space Astronomy.

The manufacturer gives the example of an instrument with a defogger that has an outer diameter of 120 mm: in this case, a 125 mm panel is recommended. If your measurement falls between two sizes, check the available space around the tube and choose a light diameter that fully covers the anti-fog shield. The mounting system uses clamps and protective pads; allow for the necessary space for the cover to move.

Take flat shots and control the aperture

The panel offers 255 brightness levels when used with the ASCOM driver and eight levels when used with the infrared remote control, allowing you to adjust the lighting to suit your camera and filters. Flat images are used to calibrate your exposures: they must be taken with the optical train and settings appropriate for your processing method. The IR version retains the motorized panel and adds infrared control for applications where a computer is not required.

A microencoder provides feedback on the cover’s position. The manufacturer specifies a repositioning accuracy of up to ±0.25° and the ability to customize the opening and closing angles. A cable-guiding system and flexible bushings are included with the assembly to minimize the risk of damage to the cables and tubing.

Heating and Control

Built-in heating elements help keep the panel dry or evaporate dew. WandererAstro describes how to control them in an advanced N.I.N.A. sequence using the Device Actions and Commands module. The ASCOM control uses a compatible connection; the included infrared remote control allows for field use without a dedicated USB connection after the initial angle setup in WandererEmpire.

With the appropriate firmware, the manufacturer also states that the unit can be controlled via ASIAIR Plus or StellaVita using the DC outputs. This feature depends on the controller’s capabilities: according to WandererAstro, the ASIAIR Mini and the ASIAIR integrated into ZWO Air cameras are not compatible. Check the model and firmware version before installation.

The manufacturer recommends manually adjusting the angles when the panel is visible. Automatic position detection is a last resort, and its success is not guaranteed; the manufacturer advises against making multiple unsuccessful attempts. Only one WandererCover is included: the telescopes and other equipment shown in the demonstration images are not included.

Technical specifications

Model

WandererCover V4-EC IR

Relevant light diameters

80, 100, 150, 190, 225, and 240 mm

Functions

Motorized hood and light panel for apartments

Control

Infrared; ASCOM and INDI supported; ASIAIR Plus and StellaVita supported under certain conditions

Power supply

12 V

Brightness Adjustment

255 levels via ASCOM; 8 levels with the infrared remote control

Dimensions: 80 / 100 / 150 / 190 / 225 / 240 mm

254 / 281 / 365 / 448 / 553 / 594 g

Outer diameter: 80 / 100 / 150 / 190 / 225 / 240 mm

105 / 125 / 175 / 215 / 250 / 265 mm

Position

Micro-encoder and customizable angles; advertised repositioning accuracy of up to ±0.25°

Heating

Built-in heating elements

Installation

Infrared remote control, mounting clamps, and protective pads as advertised by the manufacturer

Official Introduction of the WandererCover V4-EC IR

Sample setup: Lens, camera, and mount not included.
