This set of eight WandererAstro spacers for 50 mm unmounted filters is designed for the Snowflake SFW50 and SFW50S filter wheels. They allow for the installation of certain filters that are thinner than their filter holders. The manufacturer describes the spacers as 0.8 mm thick carbon fiber, with an outer diameter of 50.9 mm and an inner diameter of 48 mm.

For thinner, unmounted filters

The SFW50 and SFW50S filter housings are 2.5 mm deep. According to WandererAstro, some unmounted 50 mm filters that are less than 2.5 mm thick do not fit properly in these housings. The spacer increases the effective thickness of the assembly to allow the filter to be positioned and held in place during installation.

Before choosing these spacers, check the exact model of your wheel, then measure the diameter and thickness of the filters you want to install in it. The manufacturer’s page is intended for 50-mm unmounted filters in SFW50 and SFW50S wheels. It does not present this part as a universal spacer for all wheels or for filters of other diameters.

Two types of wheels to distinguish between

The Snowflake line includes several models. The SFW50 and SFW50S models are the ones listed on this page for these wheel spacers. The manufacturer also distinguishes between the standard 50 mm wheel and the 50 mm low-profile version: the compatibility with 2-inch mounted filters differs between the two. For this spacer, the stated compatibility applies to 50 mm unmounted filters; check your impeller’s manual and the size of your filters before installation.

The spacer does not replace the optical filter or alter its bandwidth. It is used to mechanically secure the filter in its housing. When preparing your filter wheel, identify each filter and its location, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the mounting components specific to your model.

Dimensions to Check

WandererAstro specifies an outer diameter of 50.9 mm, an inner diameter of 48 mm, and a thickness of 0.8 mm. These values describe the spacer, not the diameter or thickness of all the filters. If you have any doubts about the fit of your filters, have their thickness and mounting checked before installation. The filters and the wheel are separate components from this accessory.
