The DayStar Solar Scout SS60DS is a 60-mm achromatic doublet solar telescope equipped with a built-in H-alpha filter. It is designed for observers who want to explore the chromosphere with a dedicated instrument that can be used for both visual observation and imaging with the appropriate accessories. Its effective focal length of 930 mm and helical focus mechanism provide a compact setup for exploring solar details.
DayStar describes the SS60DS’s filtering as offering a narrow «doublestack» band. This designation refers to the advertised bandwidth performance; it does not mean that two removable filters are included. Unlike the original Solar Scout SS60, the Quark component of the SS60DS is integrated into the instrument and is not interchangeable.
The knob allows you to adjust the spectral tuning by ±0.5 Å. The 5 V / 1.5 A USB power supply powers the control system. An indicator light shows the power status, heating status, readiness, and any errors. Before observing, allow the instrument to reach its operating state according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
The front helical focuser does not rotate the eyepiece. The Solar Bullet finder projects the solar crosshairs onto a white screen, making it easier to aim without looking directly at the Sun. The Vixen/photo-style mounting bracket allows you to set up the system on a compatible mount, which must be purchased separately.
This fact sheet covers the The standard SS60DS, not the SS60DSB bundle. The accessories specific to the bundle—including the 25-mm Plössl eyepiece, the right-angle mirror, and the battery—are not included in this version. The use of 2-inch accessories or photography adapters requires appropriate optional parts.
The SS60DS serves as an entry-level model in the DayStar H-alpha line, allowing users to explore solar prominences and chromospheric details with a dedicated refractor. Its compact size makes it suitable for both personal use and club or school events, under the guidance of a qualified instructor. DayStar has been developing solar observation equipment for over 50 years.
Do you already own a telescope? The Quark H-alpha for Refractors is another option, to be selected after your instrument and its protective filter have been validated. For the SS60DS, the filter remains integrated into the eyepiece.
The adapter also allows for imaging with a camera and the appropriate connectors.
