Tele Vue Plössl 55 mm – 50° Eyepiece

55 mm Plössl Telescope: Key Points

The 55 mm Plössl Telescope is a 55-mm astronomical eyepiece offering an apparent field of 50°. It mounts on a 2-inch slip-on adapter and has an eye relief of 38 mm. This configuration is worth considering for star fields and extended deep-sky objects, depending on your telescope's focal length.

What is this model best suited for?

The Plössl formula provides a way to design a range of magnifications without seeking an extreme apparent field of view. Pay particular attention to the eye relief: it varies with the focal length and determines the position of the eye.

• Maximum stated real field of view at the 2-inch outlet; focal plane near the end of the barrel to minimize vignetting.
• Requires additional outward focusing travel; Tele Vue recommends the EBX-2120 if the travel is insufficient.
• Adjustable and removable ear pads; designed for use with glasses.

Frequently asked questions

What is the magnification with this eyepiece?
With a telescope that has a focal length of 1,000 mm, this eyepiece provides approximately 18× magnification. The magnification is calculated by dividing the telescope’s focal length by that of the eyepiece.

Is it compatible with my telescope?
It requires a 2-inch eyepiece holder or a 2-inch right-angle mirror. It cannot be inserted directly into a 1.25-inch mount. Also check that it is securely fastened and properly balanced.

Can you observe things with glasses?
The advertised eye relief is 38 mm. Comfort when wearing eyeglasses also depends on the shape of the glasses and the position of the eye; trying them on is always better than relying on a universal guarantee. The Tele Vue chart indicates DIOPTRX compatibility; this astigmatism corrector is optional.

Is the apparent field the field visible in the sky?
No. The apparent field of view of 50° describes the view through the eyepiece. The actual field of view depends on the telescope; the 46-mm field stop is the value to use to calculate it.
