The ToupTek AFW-mini is a compact electronic filter wheel designed for lightweight astrophotography setups. It holds five 1.25-inch astronomical filters and allows for automatic filter selection. It is particularly well-suited for planetary cameras, versatile AstroEye models, and deep-sky cameras equipped with small sensors, depending on the mechanical configuration of the optical train.

The wheel facilitates acquisitions using multiple channels, such as luminance and color or narrow bands. The motorized change mechanism eliminates the need for repeated disassembly to replace a filter during a series. The number of filter slots is limited to five: you must select which filters to install based on the acquisition program. This product sheet pertains to the wheel; it should not be confused with the AE676M packs, which include a selection of filters.

The manufacturer lists the weight as 340 g and the thickness as 20 mm. This design is intended to minimize the additional load on the mounts of compact cameras. ToupTek particularly emphasizes the benefit of reducing stress on assemblies using 1.25- or 2-inch slip-on mounts, where the weight of accessories can contribute to mechanical tilt. However, installation must take into account all of your instrument’s mounts.

The rotation mechanism combines a ball stop and a deep-groove ball bearing to support the turntable. This design is intended to ensure smooth rotation and improved filter stability. The manufacturer recommends unidirectional rotation when positioning accuracy is a priority. A stepper motor and a tension-maintained drive system ensure the turntable’s movement.

Two switching speeds are available. ToupTek specifies six seconds per revolution at the standard setting and twelve seconds at the slow setting. These values refer to one revolution of the mechanism, not the fixed duration of each switch between two filters. The slow setting is presented as a way to improve drive capacity and operational stability in cold conditions.

The connectors described include an M42-to-1.25-inch accessory holder with a stop, a 1.25-inch coupler, and a 16.5-mm-thick M48 female-to-M42 male adapter. Plugs protect the openings. The design minimizes stray light, which helps maintain the consistency of calibration images. Check the connections and available space before assembling your optical chain.
