The Sky-Watcher DMD-EQ5 dual-axis motorization system is designed to be mounted on a standard EQ5 equatorial mount to provide right-ascension tracking and control declination corrections via a hand controller. It features a motor on each axis and a dedicated controller. This kit is designed for users who want to motorize their manual mount while retaining simple control via directional buttons.
Once the mount is properly aligned, the right-ascension motor compensates for Earth’s rotation to track the apparent movement of celestial objects. The declination motor does not rotate automatically during this tracking. It is activated on demand, using the corresponding buttons on the controller, to adjust the object’s position within the instrument’s field of view.
The controller offers three correction speed settings: 2x, 4x, and 8x the tracking speed. The up and down buttons control declination, while the left and right buttons control right ascension. The N/Off/S selector allows you to choose the tracking direction appropriate for the northern or southern hemisphere and to turn off the control. Pointing remains under user control, with no GoTo function.
The set includes the two motors, the gears with clutches, the cables, the control handle, and the battery compartment. The control and drive components are thus combined in the same kit to equip both axes of the mount. Power is supplied by four D-cell batteries, which must be purchased separately—they are not included. The included battery compartment holds these batteries and connects to the control box to power the motor system.
This manual illustrates how to mount the drives on the right ascension and declination axes. Sky-Watcher recommends removing the optical tube before installation to facilitate access to the mount. The declination clutch can be loosened to resume manual control via the fine-tuning cable, then tightened again to reengage the motorized drive. The hand controller cables plug into the motor jacks, and the battery pack cord plugs into the controller.
