WandererAstro WandererCover V4 Pro-EC 320 and 380 mm, motorized flat-field panel

The WandererCover V4 Pro-EC combines a light panel for calibration images with a motorized cover designed for large-aperture telescopes. The versions shown here have an effective aperture of 320 or 380 mm. Their high-torque motor moves the panel in front of the aperture for flat-field exposures and then moves it out of the way for imaging.

A motorized flat panel for large instruments

The WandererCover V4 Pro-EC combines a light panel for calibration images with a motorized cover designed for large-aperture telescopes. The versions shown here have an effective aperture of 320 or 380 mm. Their high-torque motor moves the panel in front of the aperture for flat-field exposures and then moves it out of the way for imaging.

Flat images are used to characterize certain variations in lighting and dust particles in the optical train, so that these factors can be accounted for when calibrating astronomical images. These images are captured using the camera and filters in your setup. You should adjust the lighting and exposure time according to your configuration, then check the resulting signal before starting a series.

Choose between 320 and 380 mm in diameter

Measure the outer diameter of the dew shield or the front of the tube before choosing your panel. WandererAstro recommends that the light-emitting diameter be at least equal to this measurement to cover the opening. The light-emitting diameter should not be confused with the panel’s outer diameter: the latter measures 350 mm for the 320 mm version and 410 mm for the 380 mm version.

Also check the space required around the instrument throughout the entire travel range of the cover. The 280-mm Pro-EC model is also available and already has its own separate listing on Deep Space Astronomy. Each size should be chosen based on your instrument and its mounting, rather than solely on its optical aperture.

Motorized opening and position tracking

The V4 Pro-EC motor is self-locking, and a built-in encoder transmits the panel’s position. The manufacturer claims a positioning repeatability of better than ±0.25°. The opening and closing angles can be adjusted to suit the installation, with an opening angle of 270° specified for the Pro-EC series.

The motor is powerful: Keep your hands and accessories away while it is running. Before starting it up, make sure the panel will not come into contact with the tube, the mount, or the cables. Adjust the settings for your setup and consult the manufacturer’s manual.

Brightness, Controls, and Mounting

The panel offers 255 brightness levels, and the manufacturer states that it has increased the modulation frequency to reduce banding in images. The Pro-EC series does not include the built-in heating found in the V4-EC and V4-EC IR models, nor does it include the infrared remote control found in the V4-EC IR version.

The V4 Pro-EC is advertised as compatible with ASCOM and INDI. With the appropriate firmware, WandererAstro also describes control via ASIAIR Plus, StellaVita, or a controller capable of driving a DC output. The ASIAIR Mini does not have the DC output control required for this function. The motor housing includes M3 and M4 threaded holes for proper mounting, particularly on an open-frame instrument. Specific mounts should be selected based on the mounting configuration.
