iOptron MiniPier 8-inch Column Extension 8040-8

The iOptron MiniPier 8040-8 column extension increases the distance between the mount and its tripod. This 8-inch version is designed for the iOptron CEM26, HEM27, GEM28, and HAE29 mounts. It raises the mount head above the tripod, a useful arrangement when the instrument needs more space around the tripod during movement.

The MiniPier is made of cast and machined metal. Its diameter is listed as 100 mm, and its height, when configured with the included extension pieces, is 8 inches. The manufacturer lists the weight as 2 lb. This is a column extension designed to be placed between the tripod and the mount; it is not a complete tripod or mount.

Part number 8040-8 includes a 5.5-inch MiniPier 8040, along with three spacers and the bolts needed for an additional 2.5-inch extension. Mounting the spacers between the upper and lower sections results in an 8-inch configuration. The iOptron manual describes how to set them up and attach them to the tripod; consult it before installation to identify the screws and the orientation of the alignment piece.

The manufacturer also offers an optional adapter that converts the upper center mount into a 3/8-inch threaded screw. This option is intended specifically for the SkyTracker Pro, SkyGuider Pro, and SkyHunter. It is sold separately on the manufacturer’s website: it is not included in the basic configuration described here. To use the extension with one of these mounts, make sure this adapter is included or available separately.

Before choosing this extension, check the mount model and the mounting method of the support being used. The increase in space between the instrument and the tripod also depends on the dimensions of the equipment and its position: check the clearance on your setup.
