The spectral distribution of the red, green, and blue channels is designed to balance the exposure times in a 1:1:1 ratio for most optical systems. This balance is specifically optimized for red-sensitive CCD detectors. Both the blue and green filters transmit the OIII line with a specified transmission of over 95 %. The red filter is designed to transmit H-alpha and SII emissions, while the luminance filter is colorless and blocks ultraviolet and infrared light.
A spectral gap between the green and red channels reduces transmission around 589 nm to limit the influence of certain emissions from sodium and mercury lamps. The blue channel features a band designed to reduce star broadening and blue halos. Anti-reflective coatings, double-sided polishing, and blackened edges round out this design. The manufacturer intends this set for imaging galaxies, star clusters, and nebulae.
Each option includes the complete set of four filters in the selected size. The 1.25″ and 2″ versions are mounted and use M28.5 × 0.6 and M48 × 0.75 threads, respectively. The 31, 36, and 50 mm versions are unmounted discs; the last option is an unmounted 50 × 50 mm square. The glass is 2 mm ± 0.05 mm thick for the 1.25″, 2″, 31 mm, and 36 mm sizes, and 3 mm ± 0.05 mm thick for the 50 mm and 50 × 50 mm sizes. The filter holder must match the selected size and thickness.
Controlling the thicknesses ensures good parfocality, but does not eliminate the need to check the focus during exposures. Antlia notes that temperature variations alter the optical path and recommends checking the focus every 1 to 2 hours, and more frequently until the instrument has reached thermal equilibrium. This kit is intended for astrophotography with a monochrome camera. It is not recommended for visual observation or for observing or imaging the Sun.
