Sky-Watcher Skymax-180 PRO: 180/2700 Maksutov-Cassegrain telescope for planetary observation and high-resolution imaging

Visit Skymax 180-PRO Sky-Watcher is one of the best telescopes Maksutov-Cassegrain on the market for high-resolution visual observation. With its 180 mm opening and its 2700 mm focal length (f/15), it excels at resolving planetary details, lunar craters, close binary stars, and small, compact deep-sky objects (planetary nebulae, globular clusters)—all in a remarkably short tube that is easy to transport and set up.

A precision catadioptric optical system

The Maksutov-Cassegrain forms the image primarily through its mirrors, with a corrector lens (meniscus) at the front. This closed-aperture design is, by its very nature, virtually free of chromatic aberration: stars remain pinpoint-sharp and planetary colors are true to life, without the colored fringing sometimes seen in certain refracting telescopes.

Mirrors, in borosilicate, receive the proprietary treatment Radiant™ Aluminum Quartz™ (RAQ™) which increases the reflectivity to 94 %. The locking blade, meanwhile, is treated Metallic High-Transmission Coatings™ (MHTC™) : This coating maximizes light transmission and contrast. The result: sharp, high-contrast images with accurate color reproduction, on par with much more expensive instruments.

2700 mm focal length: magnification without a Barlow lens

With its f/15 ratio, the Skymax 180 delivers high native magnification, ideal for highly detailed observations without having to rely on a Barlow lens every time. The included 28 mm eyepiece already offers approximately 96x for a field of view of about 0.58°, which is slightly larger than the diameter of the full Moon. By switching to shorter focal length eyepieces, you can easily achieve magnifications of 200x to 300x on the Moon and the planets, within the limits of the atmospheric turbulence at the time.

Compact, sealed, and durable

The folded optical path concentrates a 2,700 mm focal length into a tube approximately 50 cm, for a mass of approximately 7.8 kg. The enclosed tube minimizes internal turbulence and protects the optics from dust. Focusing is achieved by moving the primary mirror using a knob on the back: there are no external moving parts, and the balance remains stable throughout the observing session. Another advantage of the Maksutov design is that it maintains its collimation very well and almost never requires adjustment.

What You'll See Through the Eyepiece

The Skymax 180 is designed for the Solar System and fine targets: Jupiter’s cloud bands and moons, Saturn’s rings and the Cassini Division, Martian polar caps and landforms, high-definition lunar terrain, close double stars, as well as planetary nebulae and the most compact globular clusters. When sharpness and contrast are paramount, it rivals instruments in an entirely different price range.

Planetary and lunar astrophotography

The Skymax 180’s long focal length makes it an excellent choice for’planetary and lunar imaging using a dedicated camera. When paired with a high-speed camera for lucky imaging, it allows you to take advantage of the brief moments of atmospheric stability to capture as much detail as possible on the Moon and the planets.

Our tips for getting the most out of it

  • Frame : Be sure to use a mount that is sufficiently stable and precise. Given the weight (about 7.8 kg) and, above all, the long focal length, an EQ5/HEQ5-class mount (or a good motorized azimuth mount) is recommended to enjoy high magnifications without vibrations.
  • Preheating : Like any thick-plate Maksutov, it’s best to let it acclimate to the outside temperature (allow a few tens of minutes) to achieve its best sharpness.
  • Accessories 1.25″ : The 2″ angled eyepiece comes with a 2″-to-1.25″ adapter, so you can use your standard-size eyepieces right away.
