The SVBONY SV215 is a 3- to 8-mm zoom eyepiece designed for observing the planets and the Moon. Its key feature is very practical: you can adjust the magnification by turning a ring, while maintaining a constant apparent field of view of 56°.
The SV215 is one of those exceptional products—well-known to regular observers—that I highly recommend. Quite simply, it’s a gem for planetary observing. Combining several short focal lengths into a single eyepiece, with settings that are easy to find, allows you to focus on what you’re observing. It’s this practical aspect that I appreciate about this zoom eyepiece.
With the SV215, multiple focal lengths are combined into a single eyepiece. The focal length can be continuously adjusted between 3 and 8 mm, with notched positions at 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 mm. These markings make it easy to find a specific focal length and to locate the correct setting by touch during a night-time observation session. This allows you to change the magnification without removing the eyepiece from the eyepiece holder to install another one.
SVBONY designed this model for planetary and lunar observation, particularly of Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. Its short focal length range allows you to explore details at different magnifications using the same accessory. The zoom ring provides access to intermediate settings, while the notches serve as reference points when you want to return to a specific setting.
The apparent field of view of 56° remains constant throughout the entire zoom range. This consistency prevents the apparent field of view from changing with each focal length adjustment. The optical design consists of six elements arranged in four groups. The optical surfaces feature a full multi-layer coating, and the lens edges are blackened. The manufacturer uses this design to enhance sharpness, contrast, and color correction.
The SV215 is advertised as parfocal across its entire focal length range. In practice, SVBONY notes that a slight adjustment to the focus may be necessary when changing focal lengths. It’s important to be aware of this caveat: parfocality makes adjustments easier, but it doesn’t guarantee that the focus will be exactly the same in every situation.
The 1.25-inch coupler features a stainless steel barrel with an M28.5 × 0.6 filter thread. A rubber eyecup provides a stated eye relief of 10 mm, which remains constant throughout the zoom range. The manufacturer also notes that mounting a Dioptrix corrector is not supported.
