Product description

20 mm Plössl Eyepiece: Key Features

The 20 mm Plössl Eyepiece is a 20-mm astronomical eyepiece offering an apparent field of 50°. It mounts on a 1.25-inch barrel and has an eye relief of 14 mm. This configuration is worth considering for star fields and extended deep-sky objects, depending on the focal length of your telescope.

What is this model best suited for?

The Plössl formula provides a way to design a range of magnifications without seeking an extreme apparent field of view. Pay particular attention to the eye relief: it varies with the focal length and determines the position of the eye.

  • The manufacturer intends these focal lengths for deep-sky and planetary observation and recommends using them in combination with Powermates.

Frequently asked questions

What is the magnification with this eyepiece?
With a telescope that has a focal length of 1,000 mm, this eyepiece provides approximately 50× magnification. The magnification is calculated by dividing the telescope’s focal length by that of the eyepiece.

Is it compatible with my telescope?
It uses a 1.25-inch mount. In a 2-inch eyepiece holder, a suitable adapter is required. The ability to focus also depends on the optical path of the accessories.

Can you observe things with glasses?
The advertised eye relief is 14 mm. Comfort when wearing glasses also depends on the shape of the glasses and the position of the eye; trying them on is always better than relying on a one-size-fits-all guarantee.

Is the apparent field the field visible in the sky?
No. The apparent field of view of 50° describes the view through the eyepiece. The actual field of view depends on the telescope; the field diaphragm of 17.1 mm is the value to use to calculate it.
