ToupTek G3M2210C: SC2210 color camera

The ToupTek G3M2210C is a color camera equipped with the SmartSens SC2210 sensor. It offers a resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels with 4 µm pixels.

This camera uses a SmartSens sensor and a 512 MB DDR3 buffer. Options include a standard or extended housing and either an AR coating or an IR-cut filter.

Setup and Use

The official specifications list up to 150 frames per second at 1920 × 1080 pixels via a USB 3.0 connection. The SmartSens SC2210 sensor uses an RGGB Bayer filter array and 12-bit conversion. This data transfer is supported by 512 MB of DDR3 memory. The manufacturer specifies USB power and passive cooling; therefore, this camera should not be marketed as a TEC-cooled camera.

The color sensor is suitable for imaging where color information is recorded by the camera. It differs from a monochrome version, which requires separately filtered images to reconstruct colors. This choice should be based on your imaging method, not solely on the sensor’s name. The final image also depends on the acquisition and processing; the camera does not replace the need to adjust focus, exposure, and gain.

The AR and IR-cut variants refer to two different optical window options, not two different sensors. The AR window is coated to reduce reflections; the IR-cut filter blocks infrared light. These features are therefore not interchangeable when you plan to capture images in this part of the spectrum. Select the option based on the filters already present in your optical path and the type of image acquisition you intend to perform.

The choice between a standard housing and an extended housing relates to the camera’s mechanical integration. It should be selected based on the configuration of your telescope, your optical splitter, or your lens. Do not choose a version based solely on its appearance: check the required connection and back focus for installation. The protective window, when offered separately, is a separate option from the housing size.

Image resolution and pixel size address two different issues. The first refers to the grid recorded by the camera; the second describes the size of the sensor’s light-sensitive elements. To choose a configuration, you must therefore consider these factors along with the instrument’s focal length and the desired framing. High resolution is no substitute for proper focusing or a suitable optical setup.

Before installation, check your instrument’s connection, the available space in the optical train, and the software used for data acquisition. Mechanical compatibility and software compatibility are two separate checks. Choosing a housing or a protective window does not eliminate the need to verify the adapters required for the selected mounting configuration. The specifications presented here apply specifically to this model and not to the entire ToupTek product line.
