WandererAstro M42 Female to M54 Male Adapter

The WandererAstro M42 female-to-M54 male adapter allows you to connect components of a photography setup that feature these interfaces. WandererAstro recommends this adapter specifically for connecting a ToupTek ATR2600M camera—configured with a back focus distance of 12.5 mm—to an AFW filter wheel. Check the exact thread sizes of both devices before finalizing this setup.

An adaptation with no announced expansion

The manufacturer specifies a female M42 interface and a male M54 interface. It specifies a 4 mm thread pitch and a 0 mm extension. This extension value is the one provided for the adapter: it does not replace the need to verify the back focus required by the telescope, its correctors, and the other elements of the optical train. The manufacturer’s page does not specify the pitch of the two threads in the text: this must be verified before ordering for a specific setup.

The terms “female” and “male” describe the two sides of the adapter. They are not sufficient to determine compatibility with every camera or wheel of these diameters. Also check the available depth for the thread, the contact surfaces, and the clearance from adjacent devices. A connector must be able to screw in without excessive force.

ToupTek Configuration Example

In its ETA M54 manual, WandererAstro describes a ToupTek ATR configuration in which the front ring of the camera is removed to reduce the back focus from 17.5 mm to 12.5 mm. The manufacturer notes that some older ToupTek cameras do not support this configuration. The camera is then attached to the filter wheel using the male M42 ring provided by ToupTek and the female-to-male M42-to-M54 adapter, as the filter wheel shown has a female M54 thread on the camera side.

The manual distinguishes this case from one where the camera side has an M42 female thread: in the example it provides, the additional adapter is not required. These instructions apply to the devices and configurations described by WandererAstro. The wheel model, camera version, and available rings must be verified for each installation.

Preparing Your Connection

Before assembly, identify the camera side and the wheel side, then compare the threads and distances of the components actually used. Keep the instructions specific to the camera and the wheel for their respective rings. The adapter is a mechanical accessory: the devices mentioned in the examples and any rings that may accompany them are not included with this product.
