Three independently controlled heating elements

The Wanderer Dew Terminator is a compact controller designed to manage the heating elements of an astrophotography setup. It features three independently controllable outputs and three 12-volt constant-voltage outputs. Its sensors monitor ambient conditions and the temperature of the heating elements to adjust their operation during the session.

Select the role for each controllable output

Each of the three controlled outputs can be configured in heating mode or switch mode. In heating mode, the heating element’s power is modulated via PWM. In switch mode, the output can power another compatible 12-volt device, such as a camera or a WandererCover panel. For example, you can control a heating element and use the other two programmable outputs as switches, depending on your system’s needs.

The three permanent outputs remain powered and do not have this control feature. When connecting devices, check the connectors, the voltage, and the power consumption of the devices, as well as the current limits of the enclosure and your external power supply. The number of outlets does not mean that each output can be used at its maximum capacity at the same time.

Manual or automatic adjustment

In manual mode, you select the power applied to each heating element. In constant-temperature mode, the controller adjusts the heating to maintain the set temperature. The third mode aims to maintain a selected temperature difference relative to the dew point calculated based on ambient conditions.

The manufacturer states that the sensors are included: a temperature and humidity sensor measures the ambient conditions, while three probes measure the temperature of the heating elements. Constant-temperature mode uses one probe; dew point mode uses both the probe and the ambient sensor. When an automatic mode is active on an output, manual adjustment is not available.

Follow-up and Integration into the Session

In WandererEmpire, settings and measurements can be viewed on the computer. The manual also describes how to control the system from N.I.N.A. or S.G.P. after connecting the ASCOM driver. You can name the outputs to more easily identify the associated devices. Input voltage and sensor data can be displayed as numerical values or graphs.

The housing features M6 and M4 threaded holes for mounting on a suitable structure. WandererAstro offers separate mounting brackets. Choose your mounting method and cables based on the equipment on your telescope, then position the probes to measure the components you want to heat.
