Skywatcher Explorer 250PDS + EQ6-R PRO: high-performance 254 mm Newton telescope for astrophotography

The Skywatcher Explorer 250PDS with EQ6-R PRO mount is a top-of-the-range set-up for passionate astronomers and demanding astrophotographers. Thanks to its large 254 mm mirror and ultra-precise motorized equatorial mount, this setup offers exceptional performance for visual observation and, above all, deep-sky imaging.

Powerful, scalable and designed for precision, this telescope is a benchmark in its class.

254 mm Newton optics: extreme power and brightness

The Explorer 250PDS is equipped with a parabolic primary mirror of 254 mm, for sharp, detailed images free from spherical aberration. With a focal length of 1200 mm (f/4.7), It offers an excellent compromise between wide field of view and resolution capacity.

With 56 % more light than a 200 mm model, this telescope allows you to observe :

  • diffuse and planetary nebulae
  • distant galaxies
  • globular clusters rich in detail
  • the Moon and planets with excellent precision

Optimized for astrophotography

The version PDS (Photo Dual Speed) is specially designed for :

  • tube slightly shortened for easier focusing with a camera
  • Crayford eyepiece holder double speed 10:1 for ultra-precise focusing
  • coma corrector compatibility for perfectly punctual stars

This makes the telescope ideally suited to capturing detailed images of the deep sky with a camera or SLR.

EQ6-R PRO SynScan mount: professional precision and stability

Visit EQ6-R PRO SynScan GoTo mount is a benchmark for astrophotography. It offers a load capacity of 20 kg, This means they can handle heavy configurations with excellent stability.

It incorporates many advanced technologies:

  • belt drive to reduce backlash and improve smoothness
  • permanent periodic error correction (PPEC)
  • high-precision stepper motors
  • SNAP port for camera control

The GoTo SynScan system provides access to a database of over 42,000 celestial objects and automatically point the telescope with great precision.

Fast movement speed (up to 4.2°/second) and precise tracking make it ideal for long exposure imaging.

Robust, portable design

The frame rests on a 2-inch stainless steel tripod, This ensures excellent stability even under heavy loads. The mounting head incorporates a carrying handle, making it easy to move around despite its considerable weight.

The system includes two 5 kg counterweights for optimum balancing.

Accessories included

The pack includes :

  • 28 mm LET eyepiece (wide field)
  • 9×50 optical finder
  • 2 x 5 kg counterweights
  • sturdy steel tripod
  • SynScan GoTo control panel

This complete kit allows immediate use for observation and provides a solid basis for advanced astrophotography.

Performance and scalability

With a theoretical maximum magnification of x500, This telescope offers impressive performance. Its design makes it easy to add accessories such as a coma corrector, autoguider or dedicated camera.

It's an evolutionary instrument, capable of accompanying the user over the long term, from advanced visuals to expert astrophotography.

Conclusion

The Skywatcher Explorer 250PDS with EQ6-R PRO is a reference setup for astronomy enthusiasts looking for professional performance. Powerful, precise and scalable, it is perfectly suited to deep-sky astrophotography and detailed observations. An ideal choice for taking your astronomy to the next level.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

What can you see with the Sky-Watcher Explorer-250PDS?

With an open aperture of 254 mm at f/4.7 and a focal length of 1,200 mm, it is primarily an astrophotography instrument: when used with a camera, it is designed to photograph nebulae, galaxies, and clusters, offering a good balance between field of view and detail. For visual observation, it also shows the Moon, the planets, and the brightest deep-sky objects.

Which eyepieces are included, and what are their magnifications?

Included eyepiece: 28 mm. With a focal length of 1,200 mm, it provides 43× magnification. To calculate the magnification of an eyepiece, divide the telescope's focal length by the eyepiece's focal length.

Is it easy to carry?

It is an imposing instrument: the tube weighs about 14.4 kg and the mount about 17.3 kg.

Should we aim it at him?

Yes, and with care: in astrophotography, an open-aperture Newtonian telescope at f/4.7 requires precise collimation. A collimation laser simplifies the adjustment. The Sky-Watcher Collimation Guide (EN) explains the procedure.

Can we take pictures?

Yes: The motorized equatorial mount tracks the movement of the sky, allowing for exposures of the Moon, the planets, and bright deep-sky objects. Its ST-4 autoguiding port then enables longer exposures.

What's in the box?

250 mm Newtonian telescope, 9×50 finder scope, 2″ eyepiece holder with 10:1 reduction ratio and 1.25″ adapter, 28 mm LET eyepiece (2″), EQ6-R mount, 2″ stainless steel tripod with accessory plate, SynScan V5 hand controller with cable, 18 mm counterweight bar (240 mm + 180 mm), 2 x 5 kg counterweights, polar finder.

Does the Skywatcher Explorer 250PDS + EQ6-R PRO come with a power supply?

No. The Sky-Watcher EQ6-R Pro mount does not come with a power supply (only a 12-V cable is included). Power requirements: 12 V DC (11 to 16 V), 4 A. For home use, we recommend the'Pegasus Astro 12 V 10 A power supply with a 5.5 × 2.1 mm plug : regulated 12.5 V output, high current reserve, and it will later be able to power a Pegasus hub (Pocket Powerbox) for the camera and the anti-fog heating elements.
