Skywatcher Explorer 130P EQ2: versatile 130 mm Newton telescope with equatorial mount

The Skywatcher Explorer 130P EQ2 is a high-performance Newton telescope designed for demanding beginners and amateur astronomers looking for a versatile, upgradeable instrument. Thanks to its high-quality parabolic mirror and precise equatorial mount, it offers an excellent night sky observation experience.

Appreciated by novices and experienced users alike, this model offers an excellent compromise between power, optical quality and ease of use.

130 mm parabolic optics: sharp, detailed images

The Explorer 130P is equipped with a parabolic primary mirror of 130 mm, A feature usually reserved for higher-end models. This type of mirror eliminates spherical aberrations, resulting in a sharper, higher-contrast image rich in detail.

With a focal length of 650 mm (f/5), This telescope offers a wide field of view while retaining good magnification capability. It is ideal for observing :

  • the Moon with great precision
  • luminous planets
  • nebulae and galaxies
  • star clusters

The parabolic mirror effectively concentrates all light rays at a focal point, guaranteeing precise focusing and optimum optical performance.

The ultra-thin (0.5 mm) arms of the secondary mirror support reduce diffraction effects and further enhance image contrast.

EQ2 equatorial mount: smooth, precise tracking

The telescope is mounted on a EQ2 equatorial mount, ideal for tracking celestial objects. Once aligned with the North Star (Polaris), it compensates for the Earth's rotation, making it easy to track objects.

Visit flexible controls for slow movements on the right ascension (RA) and declination (DEC) axes enable precise, comfortable tracking, even at high magnification.

With a visual load capacity of approx. 4 kg, The mount offers good stability for this type of instrument.

Practical, transportable design

The relatively light optical tube (approx. 3 kg) is easy to handle and install. The whole unit rests on a adjustable aluminium tripod, equipped with a practical accessory tray.

With a total weight of around 18.6 kg (including packaging), this telescope is easy to transport, yet robust enough for regular use.

Accessories included for immediate start-up

The Skywatcher Explorer 130P EQ2 is supplied with the essential accessories:

  • oculaires 10 mm et 25 mm (format 1,25″)
  • red dot finder for quick identification
  • aluminum tripod with tray

These elements enable you to start observing quickly, with different magnifications adapted to the main celestial objects.

Note: power supply and batteries not included.

Performance and versatility

The Explorer 130P EQ2 is an excellent all-round telescope, capable of adapting to a wide range of observing situations. Its 130 mm aperture reveals a wealth of detail in deep-sky objects, while still offering excellent planetary performance.

It also provides an excellent basis for moving on to more advanced observations, and even the first experiments in light astrophotography.

Conclusion

The Skywatcher Explorer 130P EQ2 is a complete, high-performance and affordable telescope, perfect for astronomers wishing to make rapid progress. Its optical quality, equatorial mount and versatility make it an excellent choice for exploring the sky in detail and developing a passion for astronomy.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

Qu'est-ce qu'on peut voir avec le Sky-Watcher Explorer 130P ?

The Moon in detail, the planets (Jupiter’s bands and moons, Saturn’s rings), and, under a dark sky, the brightest star clusters and nebulae, such as the Orion Nebula. Its maximum useful magnification is approximately 260× (2 × the diameter in mm); in practice, atmospheric turbulence often makes it necessary to stay below this limit.

Which eyepieces are included, and what are their magnifications?

Two eyepieces are included: 20 mm and 10 mm. With a focal length of 650 mm, they provide 32× and 65× magnification. To determine the magnification of an eyepiece, divide the telescope’s focal length by that of the eyepiece.

Is it easy to carry?

It can still be transported by car: the tube weighs about 3 kg and the mount about 7 kg.

Should we aim it at him?

Yes, just like any Newtonian telescope. A quick check every now and then is enough, especially after transporting it. With a collimation laser, it’s quick and easy. At f/5, it’s more demanding: a precise adjustment is clearly visible at high magnifications. The Sky-Watcher Collimation Guide (EN) explains the procedure.

Can we take pictures?

The included smartphone adapter lets you take souvenir photos of the Moon and the planets—but that's all. Deep-sky photography isn't possible: the mount doesn't track the sky's movement.

What's in the box?

130 mm Newtonian telescope, AZ-Go2 mount, red-dot finder, 10 mm and 20 mm eyepieces, smartphone adapter, stainless steel tripod with accessory tray, EQ2 equatorial mount with flexible cables, counterweight, aluminum tripod with accessory tray.
