The Skywatcher Skymax-102 EQ2 is a Maksutov-Cassegrain telescope combining compactness, precision and power. Designed for demanding beginners and experienced amateurs alike, it offers outstanding performance in planetary and lunar observation, while remaining easy to transport.
Thanks to its long-focus optics and stable equatorial mount, it's an excellent instrument for detailed, comfortable observations of the night sky.
Featuring a 102 mm and a focal length of 1300 mm (f/12.74), The Skymax-102 EQ2 is specially designed for high-magnification observations. Its Maksutov-Cassegrain optical formula reduces aberrations and delivers sharp, high-contrast images rich in detail.
With light-gathering capacity 28 % larger than a 90 mm model, it allows precise observation:
Its theoretical maximum magnification of x204 allows us to fully exploit its optical potential, particularly for planetary observations.
The Skymax-102 is supplied with a EQ2 equatorial mount, ideal for tracking celestial objects with precision. Once aligned with the celestial pole, it compensates for the Earth's rotation and keeps the observed object in the field of view.
Visit slow motion commands on the right ascension (RA) and declination (DEC) axes ensure smooth, precise tracking, particularly useful at high magnification.
This mount is an excellent basis for learning astronomical observation techniques and moving on to more advanced practices.
Thanks to its compact design, the Skymax-102 EQ2 is easy to transport and install. It represents an excellent compromise between performance and mobility, ideal for regular use at home or on the move.
The adjustable aluminium tripod ensures good stability while remaining lightweight. The integrated accessory tray keeps eyepieces within easy reach during observation sessions.
Focusing is carried out by a system of moving the primary mirror, This system offers high precision and a wide adjustment range. This system enables you to obtain a sharp image under a wide range of viewing conditions.
The 90° angled eyepiece (1.25″) ensures optimal viewing comfort, especially when the telescope is pointed at the sky.
The Skymax-102 EQ2 comes with a set of essential accessories to get you started:
These accessories provide magnifications of x52 and x130, perfectly suited to planetary and lunar observations.
The Skymax-102 EQ2 is particularly effective for planetary and lunar viewing, thanks to its high contrast and long focal length. It is also suitable for observing double stars and certain bright deep-sky objects.
Easy to handle, it's ideal for users wishing to progress in astronomy while having a reliable, durable instrument at their disposal.
The Skywatcher Skymax-102 EQ2 is a compact, precise and high-performance telescope, ideal for planetary and lunar observation. Its equatorial mount, optical quality and ease of use make it an excellent choice for astronomers wishing to work with a reliable, versatile instrument.
The Moon in great detail, the planets (Jupiter’s bands, Saturn’s rings, Venus’s phases), and double stars: its long focal length naturally provides high magnification. For deep-sky observing, it is limited to the brightest clusters and objects. Its maximum useful magnification is approximately 204× (2 × the diameter in mm); in practice, atmospheric turbulence often requires staying below this limit.
Two eyepieces are included: 20 mm and 10 mm. With a focal length of 1,300 mm, they provide 65× and 130× magnification. To determine the magnification of an eyepiece, divide the telescope's focal length by the eyepiece's focal length.
It can still be transported by car: the tube weighs about 2 kg and the mount about 7 kg.
No, practically never: a Maksutov's optics are factory-adjusted and remain stable, which is one of its major advantages for beginners. To check, a star test is all it takes: point the telescope at a bright star, defocus it slightly, and the rings should be perfectly concentric.
The included smartphone adapter lets you take souvenir photos of the Moon and the planets—but that's all. Deep-sky photography isn't possible: the mount doesn't track the sky's movement.
