Sky-Watcher SKYMAX-180 PRO EQ6-R PRO SynScan telescope: maximum power and ultra-rugged mounting

The Sky-Watcher SKYMAX-180 PRO EQ6-R PRO SynScan is a top-of-the-range Maksutov-Cassegrain telescope designed for demanding astronomers looking for a exceptional optical power combined with an ultra-sturdy, precise equatorial mount. With its diameter of 180 mm and its long focal length, it excels in detailed observation of the Moon, planets and double stars, It also offers excellent performance on bright deep-sky objects.

Its focal length of 2700 mm (f/15) makes it ideal for very high magnification observations. It provides magnifications of x108 and x270 with the eyepieces supplied, and can reach a theoretical maximum magnification of x540 under optimum conditions. You'll be able to observe details of lunar craters, the divisions of Saturn's rings and Jupiter's atmospheric structures..

High-precision Maksutov-Cassegrain optics

The SKYMAX-180 PRO is based on an optical design renowned for its high resolution and excellent contrast. Its closed tube limits internal turbulence and effectively protects optics from dust, ensuring stable, long-lasting image quality.

The primary and secondary mirrors are treated Radiant™ Aluminum Quartz (RAQ™), offering up to 94% reflectivity. This technology optimizes light transmission and guarantees bright, sharp, high-contrast images.

Focusing by displacement of the primary mirror enables precise, progressive adjustment, essential for fully exploiting the telescope's high-magnification capabilities.

EQ6-R PRO SynScan mount: stability and professional precision

The telescope is equipped with the EQ6-R PRO SynScan™ Go-To equatorial mount, a benchmark in the field of advanced amateur astronomy. Designed to withstand heavy loads, it offers a exceptional stability and tracking accuracy, ideal for observation and long exposure astrophotography.

Thanks to its stepper motors on both axes and its optimized transmission system, the frame guarantees smooth, precise movements. The Go-To SynScan allows automatically point at thousands of celestial objects via a comprehensive database.

Once aligned using the integrated polar viewfinder, the mount compensates for the Earth's rotation to keep objects perfectly centred in the field.

Observation comfort and equipment included

The SKYMAX-180 PRO is supplied with two eyepieces: a SP 10 mm and a LET 25 mm, which enables magnifications of x270 and x108. Le 2” (50.8 mm) angled return improves viewing comfort, especially for objects located at height.

The 9×50 optical finder with stand makes it easy to locate celestial objects, while the quality of the accessories ensures a pleasant experience right from the outset.

The system is based on a 2” stainless steel tripod”, This ensures maximum rigidity and excellent stability, even when observing at very high magnification or in astrophotography.

Why choose the SKYMAX-180 PRO EQ6-R PRO SynScan?

The Sky-Watcher SKYMAX-180 PRO EQ6-R PRO SynScan is the instrument of choice for astronomers wishing to reach expert level. Its combination of powerful optics, ultra-stable frame and advanced Go-To technology makes it an ideal telescope for detailed observation and long exposure astrophotography. Robust, precise and upgradeable, it is a lasting investment for exploring the sky with exceptional precision.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

What can you see with the Sky-Watcher Skymax-180 PRO?

The Moon in great detail, the planets (Jupiter’s bands, Saturn’s rings, Venus’s phases), and double stars: its long focal length naturally provides high magnification. Its 180-mm diameter also allows for viewing some bright clusters and nebulae. Its maximum useful magnification is approximately 360× (2 × the diameter in mm); in practice, atmospheric turbulence often limits observation to lower magnifications.

Which eyepieces are included, and what are their magnifications?

Two eyepieces are included: 25 mm and 10 mm. With a focal length of 2,700 mm, they provide 108× and 270× magnification. To calculate the magnification of an eyepiece, divide the telescope’s focal length by the eyepiece’s focal length.

Is it easy to carry?

It is an imposing instrument: the tube weighs about 7.8 kg and is about 52 cm long, and the mount weighs about 17.3 kg.

Should we aim it at him?

No, practically never: a Maksutov's optics are factory-adjusted and remain stable, which is one of its major advantages for beginners. To check, a star test is all it takes: point the telescope at a bright star, defocus it slightly, and the rings should be perfectly concentric.

Can we take pictures?

Yes: The motorized equatorial mount tracks the movement of the sky, allowing for exposures of the Moon, the planets, and bright deep-sky objects. Its ST-4 autoguiding port then enables longer exposures.

What's in the box?

180 mm Maksutov-Cassegrain telescope, 9×50 finder scope, 2″ right-angle mirror with 1.25″ adapter, 10 mm SP and 25 mm LET eyepieces, EQ6-R mount, 2″ stainless steel tripod with accessory plate, SynScan V5 hand controller with cable, 18 mm counterweight bar (240 mm + 180 mm), 2 x 5 kg counterweights, polar aligner.

Does the Sky-Watcher SKYMAX-180 PRO EQ6-R PRO come with a power supply?

No. The Sky-Watcher EQ6-R Pro mount does not come with a power supply (only a 12-V cable is included). Power requirements: 12 V DC (11 to 16 V), 4 A. For home use, we recommend the'Pegasus Astro 12 V 10 A power supply with a 5.5 × 2.1 mm plug : regulated 12.5 V output, high current reserve, and it will later be able to power a Pegasus hub (Pocket Powerbox) for the camera and the anti-fog heating elements.
