Color astronomical camera for astronomical imaging and compatible setups.
The color version allows colors to be recorded within a single sequence, without the sequence of RGB filters required by a monochrome camera. The choice of an additional filter depends on the target, the optics, and the model’s protective window. For short-exposure acquisitions, the effective frame rate depends on the readout mode, the selected area, and the actual data throughput provided by the computer. Pixel size must be considered in relation to the focal length and turbulence conditions. Before installation, check the threading, the distance between the sensor and the mount, and the space occupied by the filters or the optical splitter. The sensor alone does not determine the final field of view: the instrument, the focal length, and any reducers also play a role. Take your calibration images using settings consistent with those used for observations. An astronomical camera provides no protection for solar observation: any use on the Sun requires a filter specifically designed for the instrument and installed correctly.

The ZWO ASI662MC is designed for planetary, lunar, and solar imaging (the Sun only with a suitable filter) using «lucky imaging»: you capture footage for a few minutes at up to 107.6 frames per second, then stack the best frames. With 2.9 µm pixels, aim for an F/D ratio of approximately f/9 to f/15 when imaging planets, using a Barlow lens if necessary. It can also be used as an autoguiding camera.
The Sony IMX662 (STARVIS 2) offers a readout noise of 0.8 e⁻ and a well capacity of 38.2 ke⁻ for 2.9 µm pixels, good sensitivity in the near-infrared, and no amp glow. With a frame rate of 107.6 fps at 1920 × 1080, it is one of the best budget sensors for planetary imaging and guiding.
No: It is powered by its USB cable. No external power source is required.
The camera's back focus is 12.5 mm. Mounts: 1.25", 2", and M42 × 0.75.
Yes: its window is only anti-glare. Add a ZWO 1.25" UV/IR-cut filter for sharp images and accurate colors. For planets low on the horizon, a ZWO ADC Atmospheric Dispersion Corrector significantly improves sharpness.
The color version is the simplest: a single exposure produces the color image. The monochrome version, the ZWO ASI662MM, requires a filter wheel and a longer exposure time. In return, it is more sensitive and produces better results in narrowband imaging.
