Discover the 65PHQ: The Compact and Versatile Astrograph for High-Precision Astrophotography

The 65PHQ is a state-of-the-art astrograph specially designed for demanding astrophotographers who want impeccably sharp images, without the usual problems. Thanks to its unique design, there's no need to add field correctors or calculate back focus. Simply equip the 65PHQ with the accessories of your choice, aim at your target, and let optical precision do the rest.

The focal length of this compact 65mm lens is ideal for capturing the fine details of nebulae and galaxies. It maintains a relatively wide aperture ratio (f/d), allowing modern cameras to gather light quickly and effortlessly. The result is an easy-to-use instrument that delivers superb detail and exceptional maneuverability. It’s a very appealing choice, especially since using the reducer effectively gives you a second, wider-aperture instrument (smaller f/d ratio = more light collected in the same amount of time), allowing you to explore other celestial objects.

Exceptional Performance and Precision

The 65PHQ has a 65mm aperture and a focal length of 416mm, with a focal ratio of f/6.4. Its quintuplet structure, incorporating two ED lenses, offers outstanding control of chromatic aberrations and other distortions, ensuring images of exceptional quality. This "self-correcting" design supports the full-frame image circle while minimizing peripheral star distortion - perfect for capturing the finest details of the cosmos.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

What can you photograph with the Askar 65PHQ?

The Askar 65PHQ is a quintuplet telescope with two ED lenses, featuring a 65 mm aperture and a focal length of 416 mm (f/6.4), designed primarily for deep-sky astrophotography. Its focal length is ideal for large nebulae such as the North America Nebula, the Rosette Nebula, or the Heart and Soul Nebula, the entire Andromeda Galaxy, and the Pleiades with their nebular structures. At f/6.4, its standard focal ratio requires slightly longer exposure times, but in return delivers very fine star details.

Which camera should I pair it with?

With an APS-C camera featuring 3.76 µm pixels (Sony IMX571 sensor), you get approximately 1.86″ per pixel for a field of view of 3.2° × 2.2°. With the 0.75× crop factor, this increases to 2.49″ per pixel and a field of view of 4.3° × 2.9°. The 44 mm image circle covers full-frame sensors (24 × 36 mm), so a full-frame mirrorless camera will also work.

Should we add a field leveler?

No. Its optical design (a quintuplet with two ED lenses) naturally produces a flat field, with sharp stars all the way to the corners, without the need for an external field flattener. To increase the field of view and light-gathering power, the dedicated reducer (Reducer 0.75x 65PHQ) the aperture to 312 mm at f/4.8.

What backfocus should be used?

76 mm from M48×0.75 (105 mm from M54, 130 mm from M68×1), with the eyepiece holder retracted. This focal length is measured from the thread to the sensor, including rings, filter wheel, and focuser: adhering to this measurement to the nearest millimeter ensures that stars remain round in the corners.

What kind of frame should I choose?

The tube weighs about 2 kg; with the camera, filter wheel, and guide scope, the total weight is around 3.5 kg: a small equatorial or harmonic travel mount is sufficient. A refractor requires no collimation: once balanced, it is ready to use as soon as it reaches operating temperature.

Can it also be used as a visual?

Yes, as a bonus: with an angled mirror and an eyepiece, it provides high-contrast, color-accurate images of the Moon, the planets, and double stars, up to about 130×.
