Sky-Watcher Evolux 62ED telescope - New-generation compact APO refractor

The Sky-Watcher Evolux 62ED is an apochromatic ED doublet refractor designed for nomadic astrophotographers looking for a compact, lightweight, high-performance instrument. Inspired by the Evostar series, the Evolux introduces mechanical and optical improvements that make it an excellent choice for both imaging and visual observation.

Key features

  • Optical design : Apochromatic ED air-gap doublet
  • Diameter : 62 mm
  • Focal length : 400 mm (f/6.45)
  • Focal length with reducer : 360 mm (f/5.8) optional
  • Tube weight : 2.5 kg
  • Focus: 2.4" (61 mm) rack with 11:1 gear ratio
  • Optical coatings : MHTC™ (Metallic High Transmission Coatings), transmission up to 99.5%
  • Retractable mist hood : For easy transport
  • Accessories included: Aluminum case, 45 mm dovetail collar

A portable APO refractor ideal for wide-field astrophotography

Thanks to its optimized design, the Evolux 62ED is an excellent choice for light, mobile setups. It can also be used as a high-end guide scope. The optics, composed of two lenses including one in ED glass, keep chromatic aberrations to a minimum, while delivering a sharp, high-contrast image.

With the optional 0.9x reducer/flattenerwith an ED element, the system becomes a quadruplet with 2 ED lenses - ideal for full-frame imaging with a flattened field.

Excellent value for money in deep-sky and visual applications

Whether you're a beginner or an experienced astrophotographer, the Sky-Watcher Evolux 62ED offers a rare combination of optical performance, light weight, modularity and affordable pricing. Compatible with modern sensors and easily transportable, it's the tool of choice for capturing nebulae, open clusters and wide-field celestial landscapes.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

What can you photograph with the Sky-Watcher Evolux-62ED?

The Sky-Watcher Evolux-62ED is a 62-mm aperture ED doublet refractor with a focal length of 400 mm (f/6.5), designed primarily for deep-sky astrophotography. Its focal length is ideal for observing large nebulae such as the North America Nebula, the Rosette Nebula, and the Heart and Soul Nebula, as well as the entire Andromeda Galaxy and the Pleiades with their nebular structures. At f/6.5, its classic focal ratio requires slightly longer exposure times, but in return delivers very fine star details.

Which camera should I pair it with?

With an APS-C camera featuring 3.76 µm pixels (Sony IMX571 sensor), you get approximately 1.94″ per pixel for a field of view of 3.4° × 2.2°. With the 0.9× crop factor, this increases to 2.15″ per pixel and a field of view of 3.7° × 2.5°.

Do you need a leveling device or a reducer?

Yes, whenever you're using an APS-C or full-frame sensor: like any uncorrected doublet lens, it has a slight field curvature that stretches the stars in the corners. Dedicated correctors: 0.9x corrector / reducer for Sky-Watcher Evolux-62ED (equivalent focal length of 360 mm, f/5.9).

What backfocus should be used?

55 mm from the M48 mount with a dedicated 0.9× reducer-corrector. This focal length is measured from the thread to the sensor, including rings, the filter wheel, and the filter wheel: adhering to this measurement down to the millimeter ensures that stars remain round in the corners.

What kind of frame should I choose?

The tube weighs about 2.5 kg; with the camera, filter wheel, and guide scope, expect it to weigh around 4 kg: a small equatorial or harmonic travel mount is sufficient. A refractor requires no collimation: once balanced, it’s ready to use as soon as it reaches operating temperature. At 29.5 cm long, it fits easily into a bag for travel.

Can it also be used as a visual?

Yes, as a bonus: with an angled mirror and an eyepiece, it provides high-contrast, color-accurate images of the Moon, the planets, and double stars, up to about 124×.
