The Sky-Watcher Evostar 80EDX is an 80-mm apochromatic doublet refractor, designed to deliver exceptional image quality for both visual observation and astrophotography. This EDX model, a direct evolution of the famous Evostar 80ED, features significant mechanical improvements while retaining the premium f/7.5 FPL-53 glass-based optics, renowned for their sharpness and contrast. Compact, lightweight, and rugged, it is an excellent choice for discerning astronomers seeking a reliable, high-performance instrument.
At the heart of the Evostar 80EDX is a doublet lens featuring Japanese Ohara FPL-53 ED glass, which almost totally reduces chromatic aberrations. Each air-glass surface is treated with the exclusive MHTC (Metallic High-Transmission Coating) allowing light transmission of up to 99.5 %.
The result? Perfectly punctual stars against a deep black sky background, ideal for photographing nebulae, star clusters or galaxies, but also for high-precision planetary observation.
This model now includes a focuser Crayford 2.8" dual-speed 11:1 with graduated scale and 360° rotating ring, perfect for astrophotography framing. The sliding, removable mist screenIts sturdy carrying handles and sturdy anodized aluminum tube make it easy to install, transport and use in the field.
Thanks to its doublet design and reduced weight of just 4 kg, the Evostar 80EDX is easy to mount on lightweight frames, while retaining excellent stability. It is compatible with focal reducer/field corrector 0.85x (ref. 20236, optional) for a wider field of view in wide-field photography.
This telescope is supplied without eyepiece, angled bend and finder. These accessories are available separately.
For years, the Evostar ED range has set the standard for astronomy and astrophotography enthusiasts looking for excellent value for money. The Evostar Evostar 80EDX continues this tradition with welcome improvements that place it among the best compact apochromatic refractors on the market.

The Sky-Watcher Evostar 80EDX is an ED doublet refractor with FPL-53 glass, featuring an 80 mm aperture and a 600 mm focal length (f/7.5), designed primarily for deep-sky astrophotography. Its focal length is ideal for observing medium-sized nebulae (Orion, the Lagoon, the Trifid, and the Rosette), large galaxies such as M33 or the M81-M82 pair, and star clusters. At f/7.5, its standard aperture ratio requires slightly longer exposure times, but in return yields very fine star details.
With an APS-C camera featuring 3.76 µm pixels (Sony IMX571 sensor), you get approximately 1.29″ per pixel for a field of view of 2.2° × 1.5°. With the 0.85× crop factor, this increases to 1.52″ per pixel and a field of view of 2.6° × 1.8°.
Yes, whenever you're using an APS-C or full-frame sensor: like any uncorrected doublet lens, it has a slight field curvature that stretches the stars in the corners. Dedicated correctors: Reducer / Corrector 0.85x Sky-Watcher Evostar 80ED-EDX (equivalent focal length of 510 mm, f/6.4).
55 mm from the M48 mount with a 0.85× reducer-corrector. This focal length is measured from the thread to the sensor, including the rings, filter wheel, and filter wheel: adhering to this measurement down to the millimeter ensures that stars remain round in the corners.
The tube weighs about 4 kg; with the camera, filter wheel, and guide scope, expect it to weigh around 5.5 kg: an HEQ5-R Pro-class mount provides plenty of headroom. A refractor requires no collimation: once balanced, it’s ready to use as soon as it reaches operating temperature. At 47.5 cm long, it fits easily in the trunk.
Yes, as a bonus: with an angled mirror and an eyepiece, it provides high-contrast, color-accurate images of the Moon, the planets, and double stars, up to about 160×.
