The NSGen-II noise generator is used for the absolute calibration of SPIDER radio telescopes. The NSGEN-II-3 model is designed for the SPIDER300 and is used to measure radio flux in janskys.
The procedure uses radio sources whose flux is known from the literature. It compares a measurement of the source without injected noise, a measurement away from the source without injection, and then a measurement away from the source with the generator activated. These total power measurements are used to calibrate the generator and the radio telescope in order to obtain measurements of antenna temperature and flux.
The generator is installed on the H-FEED 1420 MHz and connected to the radioastronomy receiver. It helps correct for atmospheric attenuation and gain variations, particularly those caused by the antenna’s deformation under its own weight. The receiver and the radio telescope are compatible devices; they are not included in the generator’s standard configuration.
