Sky-Watcher Evostar 102/1000 telescope - Excellence in planetary observation

The Sky-Watcher Evostar 102/1000 is an achromatic refractor telescope with two air-spaced elements, designed to offer exceptional optical performance at an affordable price. This model is particularly popular with visual astronomy enthusiasts wishing to explore the planets, the Moon and bright deep-sky objects in detail.

Precision optics for stunning images

Thanks to its 102 mm lens diameter and its 1000 mm long focal length (f/9.8), the Evostar 102 delivers sharp, high-contrast images with high magnification. Its air-spaced achromatic doublet optical design effectively reduces chromatic aberration, providing more natural views than those of entry-level instruments.

Perfect for observing the Moon and planets

This telescope is ideal for high-resolution work. The lunar surfaces are revealed with impressive clarity, and the atmospheric details of Jupiter, Saturn, and Mars become visible to the trained eye. It is the instrument of choice for amateur astronomers seeking fine detail rather than sheer brightness.

Equipment included
Supplied eyepieces 10 mm and 25 mm (with a 1.25-inch nut)
Researcher 6×30 optical
Focuser 1.25″/2″ Rack Mount (Dual Fit)
Angled return 50.8 mm / 2″

Design for precision

Unlike a simple converging lens, an air-spaced achromatic doublet allows for significantly reduce chromatic aberrations. The result is an image that's more faithful to reality, with no unsightly purple fringing around shiny objects. An ideal choice for optical purists.

Mounting and compatibility

The Evostar 102 is generally offered without a mount, allowing you to choose the solution best suited to your needs: an azimuth mount for simplicity, or a motorized equatorial mount for celestial tracking and introduction to planetary astrophotography.

Why choose the Sky-Watcher Evostar 102?

  • Excellent value for money for an instrument of this optical quality.
  • A 102 mm diameter capable of displaying hundreds of celestial objects.
  • Ideal for planetary, lunar and even deep-sky observation (clusters, double stars).
  • Carefully crafted, robust and durable.
  • A versatile tube for both visual and planetary photography.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

What can you see with the Sky-Watcher Evostar-102?

The Sky-Watcher Evostar-102 is a 102-mm achromatic refractor with a focal length of 1,000 mm (f/9.8), an ideal visual observation instrument for beginners. It reveals the Moon in detail, Jupiter’s bands, Saturn’s rings, Mars at opposition, and bright deep-sky objects: the Orion Nebula, the Pleiades, the Andromeda Galaxy, the Hercules Cluster (M13), and beautiful open clusters. Its long focal ratio minimizes chromatic aberration, making it particularly enjoyable for viewing the Moon and the planets.

Is this a good instrument for beginners?

Yes. Like any telescope, it is collimated at the factory and requires no optical adjustments: simply set it up, leave the tube exposed to the open air for a few minutes, and start observing. The enclosed tube stays clean, and maintenance is minimal.

Achromatic or Maksutov Telescope: Which One Should You Choose?

For a comparable diameter, an achromatic telescope is generally less expensive than a Maksutov, warms up faster, and has no central obstruction, which preserves contrast. The Maksutov is more compact for a longer focal length; the refractor, with its 1,000 mm focal length, remains more versatile for observing both planets and large deep-sky objects.

Which eyepieces are included, and what are their magnifications?

Included eyepieces: 25 mm (40×) and 10 mm (100×). The magnification is calculated by dividing the telescope’s focal length (1000 mm) by that of the eyepiece. To explore the Moon and the planets in greater detail, a 7-mm eyepiece (143×) is a good addition to the kit; the maximum useful magnification is around 204×.

Can you do astrophotography with this telescope?

That’s not what it’s designed for. The achromatic objective lens leaves a purple halo around stars and bright objects: in astrophotography, this flaw is very noticeable. For deep-sky photography, an apochromatic telescope is the right choice. The Sky-Watcher Evostar-102 remains, above all, an excellent observational instrument.

Is it easy to carry?

Yes, it's easy to transport by car: the tube weighs about 3.5 kg.
