Sky-Watcher Esprit-100EDX - Super APO 100 mm f/5.5 triplet scope for advanced imaging

Visit Sky-Watcher Esprit-100EDX is an apochromatic triplet ED refractor designed to meet the most demanding astrophotography requirements. With its 100 mm f/5.5 objective, high-capacity 3" rotating focuser and CNC-machined components, it rivals the optics of the biggest brands on the market - for a much more affordable price.

Super APO triplet optics with FPL-53 lens

The heart of the Esprit-100EDX is a perfectly corrected triplet lens incorporating a Ohara FPL-53 Japanese ED glass lens. This type of design guarantees total color correction, even on the brightest stars. All air-glass surfaces benefit from MHTC treatment (Metallic High Transmission Coating), offering light transmission up to 99,5 %.

The f/5.5 focal ratio ensures an ideal compromise between optical speed for astrophotography and visual resolution. The image is high-contrast, sharp and free from colored bangs.

Reinforced mechanics, 3-inch rotating focuser, and CNC-machined components

The Esprit-100EDX is equipped with a 3" Linear Power eyepiece holder CNC rack-and-pinion, with 11:1 reduction, designed to support heavy cameras without bending. It features a double rotation (rotating focuser + rotating adapter) for easy orientation of the camera or optical train. The fog screen is fixedThe tube comes with sturdy clamps with central handle and 75 mm Losmandy dovetail.

Designed for expert astrophotographers

The build quality of this scope, combined with its compactness (565 mm) and fast lens, make it a highly sought-after solution for full-frame sensors. A dedicated field corrector (ref. 20188, optional) is available to ensure perfect field flatness across the entire sensor surface.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

What can you photograph with the Sky-Watcher Esprit 100EDX?

The Sky-Watcher Esprit 100EDX is an apochromatic triplet refractor with a 100-mm-aperture FPL-53 lens and a focal length of 550 mm (f/5.5), designed primarily for deep-sky astrophotography. Its focal length is ideal for medium-sized nebulae (Orion, the Lagoon, the Trifid, and the Rosette), large galaxies such as M33 or the M81-M82 pair, and star clusters. With a fast f/5.5 aperture, it allows for reasonable exposure times even when using narrowband filters.

Which camera should I pair it with?

With an APS-C camera featuring 3.76 µm pixels (Sony IMX571 sensor), you get approximately 1.41″ per pixel for a field of view of 2.4° × 1.6°.

Do you need a leveling device or a reducer?

Yes, whenever you're using an APS-C or full-frame sensor: like any uncorrected triplet lens, it has a slight field curvature that stretches the stars in the corners. Dedicated correctors: Field corrector-Sky-Watcher Esprit-100ED & 100EDX.

What backfocus should be used?

63 mm from the flattener (55 mm with the 8-mm ring). This back focus is measured from the thread to the sensor, including the rings, filter wheel, and focuser: maintaining this measurement to the nearest millimeter ensures that stars remain round at the edges.

What kind of frame should I choose?

The tube weighs about 6.3 kg; with the camera, filter wheel, and guide scope, expect it to weigh around 7.8 kg: an HEQ5-R Pro-class mount provides plenty of headroom. A refractor requires no collimation: once balanced, it’s ready to use as soon as it reaches operating temperature. At 56.5 cm long, it fits easily in the trunk.

Can it also be used as a visual?

Yes, as a bonus: with an angled mirror and an eyepiece, it provides high-contrast, color-accurate images of the Moon, the planets, and double stars, up to about 200× magnification.
