Baader VIP 2x Modular Barlow Lens – Visual Observation and Photography

The Barlow lens Baader VIP 2x is a high-end Barlow lens designed for both
both visual observation and astrophotography. Its modular design, based on
the system Baader T-2 allows it to be easily adapted to different telescopes,
eyepieces, astronomical cameras, and SLR or mirrorless cameras.

Its apochromatic optics provide a magnification of approximately 2x
while minimizing chromatic aberrations and maintaining excellent image sharpness.
It is particularly well-suited for lunar and solar imaging (with an appropriate filter) as well as planetary imaging
and for compact subjects that require a longer focal length.

High-quality optical design

The optical design of the Baader VIP was developed by Dr. Pudenz, who is also known for his
based on the Zeiss Abbe eyepieces, then adapted by Roland Christen. It was calculated for
cover a diagonal of the image corresponding to the 24 × 36 mm photographic format.

The lens features a multi-layer anti-reflective coating designed to improve light transmission
brightness and reduce internal reflections. It can therefore be used with cameras
full-frame, APS-C, or Micro Four Thirds, as well as with astronomical cameras.

T-2 Modular System

The Baader VIP features a fully modular design. Its various components can
can be assembled or removed depending on the intended use. In particular, it features a connection
standard photographic T-2, M42 × 0.75.

T-2 extension tubes can be placed between the Barlow lens and the camera so that
to increase the working distance. The greater this distance, the greater the factor
The magnification increases. The Barlow lens can therefore be used at approximately 2x or at a magnification of
higher, depending on the configuration selected.

How do I connect a camera to the Baader VIP?

To connect an SLR or mirrorless camera, you need to use a
T-2 ring compatible with the camera body. This ring replaces the lens
photographic and allows the camera body to be connected directly to the Barlow's T-2 thread.

  1. Remove the lens from the camera.
  2. Install a T-2 ring that fits the camera body mount, for example, a
    T-2 adapter ring for Sony E, Canon RF, Canon EF, Nikon Z, Nikon F, Fujifilm X, or another mount.
  3. Screw the T-2 ring onto the M42 × 0.75 thread of the Baader VIP.
    The connection is entirely mechanical: no camera lens is used.
  4. Next, insert the Barlow lens into the telescope's eyepiece holder by using
    its 1.25-inch flow path or its 2-inch configuration, depending on the chosen setup.
  5. Position the camera correctly, then carefully tighten the screws or the ring

  6. Focus the telescope using its focusing system.

The standard photo layout is therefore as follows:


Telescope → Baader VIP → T-2 thread → T-2 adapter ring → camera without a lens

In this setup, no eyepiece is placed between the Barlow lens and the camera.

viewing through an eyepiece.

Choosing the Right T-2 Ring

The required adapter ring depends entirely on the camera mount. An adapter ring designed for
A Canon lens cannot be used on a Sony or Nikon camera. It is therefore important
to select a ring that indicates both:

  • the exact camera mount; ;
  • an Astronomical T-2 connector with an M42 × 0.75 thread.

The astronomical thread should not be confused with T-2 M42 × 0.75 with the former
photographic threading M42 × 1. Although their diameters are the same, their pitches

Adjusting the Gain Factor

The reported factor of approximately 2x depends on the distance between the optical element and the Barlow lens of the
sensor. Adding T-2 extension tubes increases this distance and allows for a
superior amplification.

A higher magnification produces a larger image on the sensor, but
It also reduces brightness, increases the required exposure time, and thus makes tracking
than more demanding setups. To start with, it’s generally best to use the
standard configuration close to 2x.

Please note: The Baader VIP is a true 2x astronomical Barlow lens.
It should not be confused with optical path correctors designed for print heads
binoculars.
