Herschel Lunt Prism - Solar observation in white light
The Herschel Lunt White Light Solar Wedge prism is a precision accessory designed for white-light observation and imaging of the Sun. Unlike frontal or blocking filters, this prism offers superior image quality by capturing fascinating details of the solar photosphere, such as sunspots, granulation and faculae. Compatible with telescopes up to 150 mm aperture, it guarantees safe, immersive viewing thanks to its integrated thermal management system.
What's the point of the Herschel prism?
The Herschel prism, also known as the Solar Wedge, replaces a standard angled reflector on the back of a refractor. It works by diverting around 95 % of sunlight and heat to an integrated light trap, while the remaining 5 %, attenuated by a pre-installed ND3.0 filter, is transmitted to the eyepiece or camera. This process guarantees safe observation while offering far superior sharpness and contrast to front filters (such as film or glass filters), which can impair optical quality.
Why choose a Herschel prism rather than a blocking or frontal filter?
- Superior optical quality : Unlike front filters (film or glass), the Herschel prism preserves the integrity of the light beam, offering exceptional resolution and contrast.
- Detailed observation of the photosphere : Ideal for observing structures such as :
- Sunspots: Dark areas (umbra) surrounded by a lighter region (penumbra).
- Granulation: Bubbles of hot plasma on the Sun's surface.
- Faculae: Bright regions associated with solar magnetic fields.
- Maximum safety : Thanks to its built-in ND3.0 filter and light trap, it eliminates the risks associated with the sun's luminous and thermal intensity.
- Versatility for solar imaging: Compatible with modern cameras to capture detailed images.
Scientific operation: White light vs. other wavelengths
White-light observation allows us to explore the solar photosphere, the visible layer of the Sun where sunspots and granulation are formed. Unlike H-alpha (which targets a narrow band around 656 nm) or Calcium-K (393 nm), Herschel's prism lets through a wide range of visible wavelengths, offering a comprehensive and detailed view of the Sun.
Key features
- Integrated ND3.0 filter : Reduces light intensity for safe viewing.
- Universal compatibility :
- 1.25" model: Recommended for glasses up to 100 mm aperture.
