Why the Harmonic Drive Is a Game-Changer

A Harmonic Drive system uses a strain wave gear instead of a conventional worm gear. The main advantages are a high reduction ratio in a compact design, very low periodic error, and, above all, a load capacity far greater than that of a conventional mount of the same size.
In practical terms, the AM7 can support 20 kg without a counterweight. A conventional gear-driven mount of this size would not be capable of that. For a complete setup (large refractor, cooled camera, filter wheel, autoguiding), this load capacity transforms the experience: you set it up, turn it on, and start imaging. No more tedious balancing, no more counterweights to adjust.
AM7, AM5N, or AM3N: Which socket is right for which setup?
ZWO offers three Harmonic Drive mounts. Here's how to tell them apart:
- AM3N (CHF 1,508 with TC40 tripod, CHF 1,298 for the head only): 8 kg without counterweights, 13 kg with. For lightweight setups: 80 mm telescope with an uncooled camera, or portable setup.
- AM5N (CHF 2,008 with tripod, CHF 1,808 for the head only): 13 kg without counterweight, 20 kg with. Mid-range model. For a 100- to 130-mm refractor with a cooled camera and accessories.
- AM7 (CHF 2,358 excl. tax): 20 kg without counterweight, 30 kg with. High capacity. For heavy setups: large refractor, Newtonian, or a complete setup with a cooled camera, filter wheel, and autoguiding.
The key question: What is the total weight of your setup? If the total weight (tube + camera + accessories) is under 13 kg, the AM5N is sufficient. If it’s closer to 15 to 18 kg, the AM7 offers more leeway. For loads over 20 kg, the AM7 with a counterweight becomes essential.
We've sold quite a few, and the feedback has been excellent
The AM7 was one of the mounts most appreciated by our customers this year. The feedback has been consistently positive: setup in two minutes, precise tracking without autoguiding on exposures ranging from 30 to 60 seconds, and the stability of a heavy-duty setup without the drawbacks of a traditional mount of this capacity.
One of our customers uses it with a 130 mm Petzval refractor, a cooled IMX571 camera, a filter wheel, and an OAG: the entire setup weighs about 14 kg. Even without a counterweight, the AM7 handles it with ease. With autoguiding, 300-second exposures produce images with no star trails.
Recommendations: Column extension and counterweight
To get the most out of the AM7, two accessories are recommended:
Column Extension a tripod column extension with 3/8" thread (CHF 41) allows you to raise the mount on the tripod. The advantage: the counterweight bar passes under the mount without risking contact with the tripod during a transit near the meridian position. A small investment that prevents a big problem.
The Counterweight : Even though the AM7 can support 20 kg without a counterweight, for heavy setups (over 15 kg), a counterweight with its bar provides a safety margin. A Sky-Watcher EQ8 10 kg counterweight (CHF 155) or a suitable counterweight kit will do the trick. The bar mounts under the mount, and the counterweight balances the weight of the tube to reduce the load on the motor. With a counterweight, the capacity increases to 30 kg.
An individual test report
Each AM7 is individually tested at the factory and comes with its own test report. This document specifies the periodic error measured on your specific unit, not an average value. For astrophotography, this is invaluable: you know the actual performance of your mount, rather than just a marketing specification.
The typical periodic error of ±10 arcseconds, combined with autoguiding, allows for exposures of 300 seconds or longer without star trails. Without autoguiding, for exposures of 30 to 60 seconds, the tracking remains sufficient to produce usable results.
Integrated cable management
ZWO has integrated the power and data connections directly into the mount clamp. The cables that normally have to go around the mount (power, USB to the camera, autoguiding) now run through the clamp. The result: a cleaner setup, fewer cables hanging down and getting caught, and more reliable cable management for fixed or remote installations.
Connections and Control
The AM7 can be controlled via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, an ASIAIR, a standard hand controller, or a web interface. The ASIAIR is particularly useful: it centralizes control of the mount, camera, autofocus, and autoguiding in a single app on a smartphone or tablet.
