Product description

ZWO ASI585MC

Color astronomical camera for astronomical imaging and compatible setups.

Usage and Selection of the Mounting Method

The color version allows colors to be recorded within a single sequence, without the sequence of RGB filters required by a monochrome camera. The choice of an additional filter depends on the target, the optics, and the model’s protective window. For short-exposure acquisitions, the effective frame rate depends on the readout mode, the selected area, and the actual data throughput provided by the computer. Pixel size must be considered in relation to the focal length and turbulence conditions. Before installation, check the threading, the distance between the sensor and the mount, and the space occupied by the filters or the optical splitter. The sensor alone does not determine the final field of view: the instrument, the focal length, and any reducers also play a role. Take your calibration images using settings consistent with those used for observations. An astronomical camera provides no protection for solar observation: any use on the Sun requires a filter specifically designed for the instrument and installed correctly.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

What is the ZWO ASI585MC designed for?

The ZWO ASI585MC is designed for planetary, lunar, and solar imaging (the Sun only with a suitable filter) using «lucky imaging»: you capture footage for a few minutes at up to 46.9 frames per second, then stack the best frames. With 2.9 µm pixels, aim for an F/D ratio of approximately f/9 to f/15 for planetary imaging, using a Barlow lens if necessary. It is also suitable for electronic-assisted astronomy (EAA): short exposures stacked in real time on bright deep-sky objects.

What makes the ZWO ASI585MC sensor stand out?

The Sony IMX585 (STARVIS 2 technology) combines very low readout noise (0.7 e⁻), high well capacity for 2.9 µm pixels (40 ke⁻), and high sensitivity in the near-infrared. With no amp glow and a fast frame rate (46.9 frames/s), it is a highly versatile sensor, suitable for everything from planetary to deep-sky imaging, offering excellent value for the price.

Does the ZWO ASI585MC require a power supply?

No: It is powered by its USB cable. No external power source is required.

What backfocus setting should be used with the ZWO ASI585MC?

The camera's back focus is 6.5 mm or 17.5 mm, depending on the adapter. Mounts: 2″ and M42 × 0.75.

Do you need a filter to photograph planets with the ZWO ASI585MC?

Yes: its window is only anti-glare. Add a ZWO 1.25" UV/IR-cut filter for sharp images and accurate colors. For planets low on the horizon, a ZWO ADC Atmospheric Dispersion Corrector significantly improves sharpness.

Color or monochrome: Which version of the ZWO ASI585MC should you choose?

The color version is the simplest: a single exposure produces the color image. The monochrome version, the ZWO ASI585MM, requires a filter wheel and a longer exposure time. In return, it is more sensitive and produces better results in narrowband imaging.

Where can I find the ZWO ASI585MC manual?

The manufacturer's manual (in English) is available here: ZWO ASI585MC Manual (PDF).

How to Care for Your Instrument

Here are a few accessories we've selected for this model, depending on your needs.

Sky-Watcher HAC125DX

Uncooled color camera used on the HAC125DX for wide-field imaging. Check the focus, connections, cable routing, and total weight in front of the tube; its 62-mm diameter extends beyond the 53-mm secondary mirror and increases the obstruction.
