The SVBONY MK105 Pro is a compact 105 mm f/13.3 Maksutov-Cassegrain telescope, tested under real-world conditions by Francisco Perez on the SVBONY blog on October 30, 2026. The Moon, planets, solar observation, and deep sky: the review covers it all. At CHF 299, it’s the most affordable planetary telescope in the SVBONY lineup. Here’s what it’s worth, and how it compares to the MK127.

A compact Maksutov weighing 2.2 kg

The MK105 Pro is 385 mm long and weighs 2.2 kg. It is a short, sealed tube, like all Maksutovs: the sealing ring (the meniscus) protects the mirrors from dust and moisture, and the sealed tube minimizes internal turbulence. Weighing 2.2 kg, it can be mounted on a lightweight mount: the AZ-Go2, Star Adventurer GTi, or even a camera mount with a ball head.

With a focal length of 1,400 mm and an f/13.3 aperture, the MK105 Pro is designed for planetary observation. At 210x magnification (6.7 mm eyepiece), you can observe the Moon in detail: the craters Tycho, Copernicus, and Plato, as well as the Apennine Mountains. Jupiter reveals its two equatorial bands and its Galilean moons. Saturn displays its rings.

Francisco Perez's Test: Moon, Planets, Sun, and Deep Sky

On October 30, 2026, Francisco Perez published a comprehensive review of the MK105 Pro on the SVBONY blog. He tested the scope in four different observation scenarios:

  • The Moon : Detailed views of craters and mountains, with high contrast thanks to the closed tube.
  • The planets : Jupiter (stripes and moons), Saturn (rings). A magnification of 210x is sufficient for these targets.
  • Solar Energy : With a Baader AstroSolar solar filter (not included), sunspots are visible. Never point the telescope at the Sun without a filter.
  • The deep sky : Test shot of M42 (the Orion Nebula). At 105 mm, the nebula is visible but remains modest in size. This is a secondary use for a Maksutov.

His conclusion: a compact, well-built planetary telescope with surface treatments offering 99 % reflectivity that maximize light collection. It’s not a telescope for deep-sky observing, but it’s an excellent compact telescope for observing the Moon and the planets.

MK105 Pro vs. MK127: Which Diameter Is Best for Which Application?

SVBONY offers two Maksutov models in its store: the MK105 Pro for CHF 299 and the MK127 for CHF 369.11 (excluding tax). Here's how they compare:

  • MK105 Pro (CHF 299): 105 mm, 1,400 mm, f/13.3, 2.2 kg, 385 mm long. The most compact and lightweight model. Lightweight mount. For observing the Moon, planets, and the Sun in a portable setup.
  • MK127 (CHF 369.11, excluding tax): 127 mm, 1,500 mm, f/11.8, 2.9 kg. Larger aperture (1.46 times more light), dual-speed focuser, 99 % dielectric coatings. Flat-field design. 0.65x reducer included. For more advanced planetary photography.

The difference: 22 mm of additional aperture on the MK127, which translates to 46 % more collecting area. On Jupiter and Saturn, the gain in detail is visible. The MK127 includes a flat-field filter, a dual-speed focuser, and a 0.65x reducer. The MK105 Pro is lighter (2.2 kg vs. 2.9 kg) and less expensive (CHF 299 vs. CHF 369.11).

To get started with planetary gearboxes without breaking the bank: the MK105 Pro for CHF 299. To take it a step further: the MK127 for CHF 369.11.
