The Vixen R200SS: A Newtonian Telescope for Astrophotography and Visual Observation

The Vixen R200SS is a Newtonian telescope designed for astrophotography and visual observation of the deep sky. With its fast 200 mm aperture and f/4 focal ratio, it offers excellent brightness, short exposure times and a wide field of view, making it ideal for capturing nebulae, galaxies and star clusters.

Optical characteristics

  • Opening : 200 mm, offering a light-gathering capacity 816 times greater than the human eye.
  • Focal length : 800 mm, with a fast f/4 aperture ratio, perfect for deep-sky photography.
  • Parabolic primary mirror : Ensures correction of spherical aberrations and optimum sharpness.
  • Advanced coating : The mirror is coated with a protective quartz layer applied by a vacuum evaporation process developed by Vixen, guaranteeing high reflectivity and enhanced durability.

Mechanical Design

  • Compact, lightweight tube: A length of 700 mm and a weight of just 5.3 kg (without accessories) make it easy to transport and install on medium equatorial mounts.
  • Open tube : Allows rapid cooling, reducing internal thermal turbulence.
  • Eyepiece holder : Compatible with 2" and 1.25" accessories, equipped with M60 and T2 threads for cameras.

Astrophotography performance

  • Deep sky : Easily capture large objects like the Orion Nebula or the Andromeda Galaxy.
  • Optional coma corrector : Essential for sharp images right to the edge of the field with full-frame sensors.
  • Short exposure times : Thanks to its high brightness, it reduces the exposure times needed to obtain detailed shots.

Main applications

  • Wide-field astrophotography: ideal for photographing diffuse nebulae, galaxies and open clusters.
  • Visual observation: Excellent for exploring deep-sky objects with high contrast.
  • Scientific and amateur versatility: Suitable for demanding amateur astronomers and research.

Accessories Included

  • Two clamps and a Vixen dovetail.
  • A 7×50 illuminated reticulated optical finder.
  • A compatible 2" and 1.25" eyepiece holder.

Key benefits

  • Optical speed (f/4): for short exposure times in astrophotography.
  • Lightweight and portable: easy to mount on frames like the Vixen SXD2 or EQ6.
  • Japanese optical quality: robust design with excellent sharpness and high contrast.

Summary

The Vixen R200SS is a high-performance Newtonian telescope that combines lightness, optical speed and versatility. It is an excellent choice for astrophotographers wishing to capture spectacular images of the deep sky, while benefiting from an easy-to-handle instrument.
