Player One Uranus-M Pro (IMX585) - USB3.0 mono cooled camera for deep sky, solar, lunar and planetary applications

Visit Uranus-M Pro is Player One's new monochrome cooled camera (sensor Sony IMX585 1/1.2″8.3 MP, 2.9 µm pixels). Designed for performance and reliability, it combines a 2-stage TEC cooling (Delta-T up to 35-40 °C), a lightweight carbon-fiber chassisa integrated anti-fog system and a tilt plate front 3P + rear 4P for precise adjustment of field flatness. Its on-board electronics 512 MB DDR3 cache for stable, lossless image acquisition, and the IMX585 sensor exploits STARVIS 2 for high sensitivity and low read noise.

With its full-well of 47 ke- (i.e. ~3.6 × IMX485), a throughput up to 47 fps in RAW8 and the absence of amp-glow (non-amp-glow), the Uranus-M Pro delivers a clean sky background and sharp stars, whether for narrowband/LRGB deep-sky imaging or wide-field mosaics. Its 1/1.2″ format also makes it easier to capture the entire solar or lunar disk using a short focal length.

Key points to remember

  • IMX585 Mono Sensor (1/1.2″) - 3856 × 2180 (8.3 MP), 2.9 µm pixels, 12.85 mm diagonal, technology STARVIS 2.
  • Full-well 47 ke- - High dynamic range to preserve the highlights of stars and bright nebulae.
  • 2-stage TEC cooling - Typical Delta-T 35-40 °C, adjustable fan speed, fine control in ASCOM driver.
  • Non-amp-glow - Truly black" dark files, simplified processing and enhanced image quality.
  • Integrated anti-fog (adjustable power) - Clear all night, even in high humidity.
  • Double tilt plate : front 3P (original rise) + (original rise) rear 4P (included) to fit filter wheels, drawers, OAG and RASA.
  • Ultra-light carbon-fiber chassis - Approx. 420 g, robust design, simplified wiring (power supply and USB in fixed part).
  • 512 MB DDR3 - Stabilized USB flow, fewer demands on the PC, USB 3.0 (Type-C) compatibility and basic operation even with USB 2.0.
  • High speed - Up to ~47 fps in RAW8 depending on mode and configuration.
  • Very low dark current - ~0.0004 e-/s/pixel at -20°C and ~0.005 e-/s/pixel at 0°C.

For what uses?

  • Deep sky LRGB & narrowband : the large full-well and absence of amp-glow give clean, responsive acquisitions to processing (Hα, O III, S II, LRGB).
  • Solar & lunar : The 1/1.2″ format makes it easy to capture the entire disk with short-focal-length refractors; mosaics can be created more quickly.
  • Planetary fast frame rate and low noise for detailed footage, particularly useful on Jupiter, Saturn and the Moon.

Recommended cooling, fan and anti-fog settings

  • Delta-T standard 35-40°C (e.g. ambient 30°C, fan 100 %, anti-fog 1 %).
  • Recommended setting 30-35°C below ambient, fan 50-70 %, anti-fog ~10 % (conso ~40-60 %).
  • ASCOM controls target temperature, fan speed, anti-fog power.

Sensor tilt management: round corners, sharp stars

The Uranus-M Pro is supplied with a front tilt plate 3P (installed) and a back plate 4P (included). The 3P covers most cases (single optical train). The 4P is ideal if you're using a filter wheel/drawer + OAG fixed-angle, or critical optics such as the RASA. A high-density foam gasket prevents lateral light leakage.

USB, DDR3 cache and storage

The port USB-C 3.0 provides full frame rate (up to ~47 fps in RAW8). The 512 MB DDR3 stabilize the stream to prevent image drop-outs and reduce playback noise due to transfer variations. The camera can operate on a basic USB 2.0 port, but to get the most out of it, opt for USB 3.0 and a USB 2.0 port. Fast SSD for recording.

Scientific performance and processing

  • HCG mode active from ~gain 210: reduced playback noise, optimized dynamics.
  • Dark frames : totally dark and non-amp-glowsimplifying pre-processing.
  • Reading noise tests : achievable with SharpCap 4 (tool Sensor Analysis) to check your figures.

Backfocus & configurations (55 mm typical)

The Uranus-M Pro integrates easily into standard light trains BFL 55 mm with a filter wheel or 1.25″/2″ filter drawer and OAG. Some combinations may require 56 mm to compensate for filter thickness. Check the optical lengths of each ring and accessory in your setup.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

What is the Player One Uranus-M Pro designed for?

The Player One Uranus-M Pro is designed for deep-sky photography using long exposures: nebulae, galaxies, and clusters. Its cooling system (35 °C below ambient temperature) keeps thermal noise very low during exposures lasting several minutes. With its 2.9 µm pixels, it pairs well with instruments with focal lengths of approximately 300 to 600 mm (1 to 2″ per pixel). In monochrome mode, it can be used with LRGB or narrowband filters (Hα, OIII, SII) and remains effective under urban skies. Its frame rate of 47 frames per second also makes it suitable for imaging the Moon and planets (and the Sun with an appropriate solar filter).

What makes the Player One Uranus-M Pro's sensor stand out?

The Sony IMX585 (STARVIS 2 technology) combines very low readout noise (0.7 e⁻), high well capacity for 2.9 µm pixels (47 ke⁻), and high sensitivity in the near-infrared. With no amp glow and a fast frame rate (47 frames/s), it is a highly versatile sensor, suitable for everything from planetary to deep-sky imaging, offering excellent value for the price.

What power supply is required for the Player One Uranus-M Pro?

The cooling system requires an external 12 V DC power supply with a minimum current rating of 5 A (maximum power consumption: 3 A). It is not included with the camera: we recommend the'Pegasus Astro 12 V 10 A power supply (2.1 mm plug). In the field, a Pegasus Astro unit like the Pocket Powerbox Advance It also powers the mount and the heating elements from a single source. Without a 12-volt power supply, the camera operates via the USB cable, but without cooling.

What backfocus setting should be used with the Player One Uranus-M Pro?

The camera's back focus is 17.5 mm. Mount: 1.25″; M42 × 0.75. If using a corrector or reducer that requires 55 mm, make up the difference with extension rings, taking into account the filter wheel or filter drawer, if present.

Which filter wheel and which filters should I use with the Player One Uranus-M Pro?

To take color photos with the Player One Uranus-M Pro, you need a filter wheel: for this sensor, the Player One Phoenix 8 × 1.25″ Filter Wheel is suitable. When it comes to filters, we recommend the Antlia line: the Antlia LRGB-V Pro Kit for galaxies and clusters, and filters Antlia Hα Pro 3 nm, OIII Pro 3 nm and SII Pro 3 nm For narrow-band nebulae, choose the 1.25″ mounted version.

How do I use autoguiding with the Player One Uranus-M Pro?

With a Player One FHD-OAG MINI Optical Splitter and a small guidance camera like the Player One Xena 585M, you guide through the main telescope. A guide scope such as the'Askar 32 mm is the simplest alternative.

Can the window on the Player One Uranus-M Pro fog up?

An anti-fog heating element is built into the front of the sensor window. It prevents fogging and frost when the sensor is cooled well below room temperature.

Color or monochrome: Which version of the Player One Uranus-M Pro should you choose?

The monochrome version is more sensitive and produces better results in narrowband, but it requires a filter wheel. The color version, the Player One Uranus-C PRO, produces a color image in a single exposure.
