ZWO ASI183MM Pro

The ASI183MM Pro is a cooled monochrome camera featuring a Sony IMX183 sensor with a resolution of 5496 × 3672 pixels and a pixel pitch of 2.4 µm, making it suitable for high-resolution imaging at short focal lengths. It allows for filter-based image acquisition, requiring careful calibration of amp-glow and verification of the risk of oversampling at long focal lengths.

Product description

ZWO ASI183MM Pro: 2.4 µm pixels for short focal lengths

The ASI183MM Pro is a cooled monochrome camera whose Sony IMX183 sensor offers 5496 × 3672 pixels on a 13.2 × 8.8 mm area. Its unique feature lies in its small 2.4 µm pixels: they allow for fine sampling without requiring a long focal length. It is therefore worth considering for use with a short, well-corrected telescope when seeking to preserve detail in the structures of nebulae or in small objects within the field of view.

Choosing a Camera and Instrument Combination

About 20 megapixels at this format don’t provide the same field of view as a large sensor. Before making your choice, simulate the framing using the actual focal length, including the teleconverter. At long focal lengths, these pixels can lead to oversampling: tracking demands increase without necessarily revealing more detail amid turbulence. Precise focusing and consistent tracking are therefore just as important as resolution. This model stands out for the fineness of its pixel pitch, not for a universal promise of superior resolution.

Monochrome: Organizing Color and Narrow Stripes

Without a color filter array, the sensor is used for luminance acquisitions or behind selected filters. A color image requires separate series of exposures and their combination, for example in RGB or with a selection of narrowband filters suitable for emission nebulae. Allow sufficient time per channel and plan for the installation of a filter wheel if your project requires it. The built-in USB 2.0 hub allows you to connect accessories, while the main USB 3.0 connection transfers images to the acquisition system.

Calibration should be performed as soon as the photo is taken

The advertised maximum capacity is 15,000 electrons, and the conversion is performed using 12 bits. Bright stars can therefore require shorter exposure times than the faint extensions of the target alone would suggest. Readout noise depends on the gain; ZWO quotes 1.6 electrons at 30 dB. The buffer and internal processing limit amp-glow, but this model is not advertised as being free of this glow. Take dark frames with the same exposure time, temperature, and settings as your images to calibrate this signal consistently.

Cooling and Additional Uses

Active cooling helps control thermal noise during long exposures. The product datasheet specifies a temperature difference of 35 °C below ambient; it is important to maintain a control margin rather than systematically aiming for the lowest possible temperature. ZWO requires an external power supply of 11 to 14 V, even when cooling is not in use, and recommends a suitable 12 V power supply. Do not rely solely on the USB cable.

The advertised frame rate reaches 19 frames per second at full resolution, with higher frame rates in a reduced window. This also makes it suitable for lunar imaging, but the camera is primarily intended for finely sampled deep-sky imaging. An important point for another application: ZWO notes a possible grid pattern in H-alpha solar imaging and recommends using flat-field images. It is therefore not the simplest choice for this specialty; furthermore, all solar imaging requires appropriate and properly installed solar filters.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

What is the ZWO ASI183MM Pro designed for?

The ZWO ASI183MM Pro is designed for deep-sky photography using long exposures: nebulae, galaxies, and clusters. Its cooling system (40 °C below ambient temperature) keeps thermal noise very low during exposures lasting several minutes. With its 2.4 µm pixels, it works well with instruments with focal lengths of approximately 250 to 500 mm (1 to 2″ per pixel). In monochrome mode, it can be used with LRGB or narrowband filters (Hα, OIII, SII) and remains effective under urban skies.

What makes the ZWO ASI183MM Pro sensor stand out?

The Sony IMX183 packs 20.2 Mpx onto a 1″ sensor thanks to very small 2.4 µm pixels: plenty of detail at short focal lengths (camera lenses, small eyepieces). On the other hand, the well capacity is modest (15 ke⁻), and bright stars saturate more quickly.

What power supply is required for the ZWO ASI183MM Pro?

The cooling system requires an external 12 V DC power supply; 3 A is recommended (5.5 × 2.1 mm connector, center positive). It is not included with the camera: we recommend the'Pegasus Astro 12 V 10 A power supply (2.1 mm plug). In the field, a Pegasus Astro unit like the Pocket Powerbox Advance It also powers the mount and the heating elements from a single source. Without a 12-volt power supply, the camera operates via the USB cable, but without cooling.

What backfocus setting should be used with the ZWO ASI183MM Pro?

The camera's back focus is 17.5 mm (6.5 mm without the removable 11 mm T2 extension ring). Mounts: 2″ and M42 × 0.75. If using a corrector or reducer that requires 55 mm, make up the difference with extension rings, taking into account the filter wheel or filter drawer, if present.

Which filter wheel and which filters should I use with the ZWO ASI183MM Pro?

For color photography with the ZWO ASI183MM Pro, you need a filter wheel: for this sensor, the ZWO EFW 8 × 1.25″ Filter Wheel is suitable. When it comes to filters, we recommend the Antlia line: the Antlia LRGB-V Pro Kit for galaxies and clusters, and filters Antlia Hα Pro 3 nm, OIII Pro 3 nm and SII Pro 3 nm For narrow-band nebulae, choose the 1.25″ mounted version.

How do I set up autoguiding with the ZWO ASI183MM Pro?

With a ZWO OAG Optical Splitter and a small guidance camera like the ZWO ASI220MM Mini, you guide through the main telescope. A guide scope such as the'Askar 32 mm is the simplest alternative.

Does the ZWO ASI183MM Pro have a USB hub?

Yes: A built-in USB 2.0 hub allows you to connect a filter wheel, a guide camera, or a focuser directly to the camera, reducing the number of cables running to the computer.

Color or monochrome: Which version of the ZWO ASI183MM Pro should you choose?

The monochrome version is more sensitive and produces better results in narrowband, but it requires a filter wheel. The color version, the ZWO ASI183MC Pro, produces a color image in a single exposure.

Where can I find the ZWO ASI183MM Pro manual?

The manufacturer's manual (in English) is available here: ZWO ASI183MM Pro Manual (PDF).
