Product description

ZWO ASI533MM Pro: A square sensor for creating images using filters

The ASI533MM Pro features a monochrome channel centered on a square format: its Sony IMX533 sensor measures 11.31 × 11.31 mm and has 3008 × 3008 pixels. This framing is particularly well-suited for compositions centered around a central object, such as a compact nebula, a cluster, or a galaxy whose surroundings fit within the instrument’s field of view. It does not replace a large rectangular sensor for wide-angle panoramas; a field simulation remains the best way to verify whether a target requires a mosaic.

A format that changes the way you frame your shots

The square format provides the same horizontal and vertical field of view. This means you can compose an image without having to choose between landscape and portrait orientation, although rotation is still useful for positioning structures and stars. Its relatively compact image area requires a more central portion of the image circle than a full-frame sensor. This does not eliminate the need for sensor correction and perpendicularity, but it avoids requiring the lens to cover a large diagonal. The 3.76 µm pixels must be considered in relation to the focal length and typical turbulence conditions.

Select "Monochrome" to control each channel

The MM version does not directly produce a color image. It records successive exposures through the selected filters, and the channels are then combined during processing. This allows you to allocate time separately to luminance, red, green, and blue, or to prioritize certain emission lines using appropriate filters. For a project spanning multiple nights, prepare a list of channels and maintain a consistent framing. A filter wheel and filters are part of the optical train you’ll need to include depending on your method; their inclusion should not be assumed based on the product line illustrations.

A sensor background without amp-glow—not without calibration

ZWO announces amp-glow-free electronics for the ASI533MM and MC Pro. This feature eliminates the unwanted glow caused by the electronics during long exposures and simplifies background processing. It does not eliminate dark current, defective pixels, dust, or illumination gradients: darks and flats remain essential. The spec sheet lists a maximum capacity of 50,000 electrons, 14-bit conversion, and a peak quantum efficiency of 91 % for the monochrome version. This last figure does not represent uniform sensitivity across all wavelengths.

Set up a reproducible configuration

The two-stage thermoelectric cooler achieves a specified temperature difference of 35 °C below ambient in a test at 30 °C. The achievable temperature difference depends on the conditions; most importantly, choose a temperature that the camera can maintain without operating continuously at its limit. An external 12 V power supply rated at 3 to 5 A is recommended, with a 5.5 × 2.1 mm connector and center-positive polarity. USB 3.0 is the data connection; it is not a replacement for this power supply.

This camera is therefore designed for astrophotographers who want to learn or practice methodical monochrome imaging in a square field of view, rather than immediately capturing color images in a single series. Check the total optical path length, including filters and adapters, before assembling the system: the sensor’s small size does not mean you can ignore the required correction distance.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

What is the ZWO ASI533MM Pro designed for?

The ZWO ASI533MM Pro is designed for deep-sky photography using long exposures: nebulae, galaxies, and clusters. Its cooling system (30 °C below ambient temperature) keeps thermal noise very low during exposures lasting several minutes. With its 3.76 µm pixels, it pairs well with instruments with focal lengths of approximately 400 to 800 mm (1 to 2″ per pixel). In monochrome mode, it can be used with LRGB or narrowband filters (Hα, OIII, SII) and remains effective under urban skies.

What makes the ZWO ASI533MM Pro sensor stand out?

The Sony IMX533 sensor is square: 3008 × 3008 pixels on a 11.31 × 11.31 mm area. This 1:1 aspect ratio naturally frames nebulae, galaxies, and compact clusters without losing any pixels and makes mosaicking easier. It is also free of amp glow: the darks are very clean, with a well capacity of 50 ke⁻ for 3.76 µm pixels.

What power supply is required for the ZWO ASI533MM Pro?

The cooling system requires an external 12 V DC power supply; 3 A is recommended (5.5 × 2.1 mm connector, center positive). It is not included with the camera: we recommend the'Pegasus Astro 12 V 10 A power supply (2.1 mm plug). In the field, a Pegasus Astro unit like the Pocket Powerbox Advance It also powers the mount and the heating elements from a single source. Without a 12-volt power supply, the camera operates via the USB cable, but without cooling.

What backfocus setting should be used with the ZWO ASI533MM Pro?

The camera's back focus is 17.5 mm (6.5 mm without the removable 11 mm T2 extension ring). Mounts: 2″ and M42 × 0.75. If using a corrector or reducer that requires 55 mm, make up the difference with extension rings, taking into account the filter wheel or filter drawer, if present.

Which filter wheel and which filters should be used with the ZWO ASI533MM Pro?

For color photography with the ZWO ASI533MM Pro, you need a filter wheel: for this sensor, the ZWO EFW 8 × 1.25″ Filter Wheel is suitable. When it comes to filters, we recommend the Antlia line: the Antlia LRGB-V Pro Kit for galaxies and clusters, and filters Antlia Hα Pro 3 nm, OIII Pro 3 nm and SII Pro 3 nm For narrow-band nebulae, choose the 1.25″ mounted version.

How do I set up autoguiding with the ZWO ASI533MM Pro?

With a ZWO OAG Optical Splitter and a small guidance camera like the ZWO ASI220MM Mini, you guide through the main telescope. A guide scope such as the'Askar 32 mm is the simplest alternative.

Does the ZWO ASI533MM Pro have a USB hub?

Yes: A built-in USB 2.0 hub allows you to connect a filter wheel, a guide camera, or a focuser directly to the camera, reducing the number of cables running to the computer.

Color or monochrome: Which version of the ZWO ASI533MM Pro should you choose?

The monochrome version is more sensitive and produces better results in narrowband, but it requires a filter wheel. The color version, the ZWO ASI533MC Pro, produces a color image in a single exposure.

Where can I find the ZWO ASI533MM Pro manual?

The manufacturer's manual (in English) is available here: ZWO ASI533MM Pro Manual (PDF).
